Grace bio update 8/21/09

Sweet, lovely Grace has been somewhat slow to blossom, but has made great progress in the confidence department in the past few months. This once shy girl is now an official flirt with people, and shamelessly solicits attention with a low waggy tail from anyone whose eye she can catch. Which isn't tough, really, because she has grown into a beautiful dog! She's put on some much needed weight, and her coat is healthy, long, and glossy black. With her delicate features and coy, charming greetings, it's a real scrooge who can ignore this pretty girl!

An equally interesting development is that, despite our hunch, Grace wanted nothing to do with livestock...we gave her a try and she ran the other way! Instead, frisbee and ball have captured her heart, and all of her drive and instinct are directed to fetching, to which she has become addicted. She is quite a natural at frisbee, and we think she shows real potential to be a competition disc dog or, with her love for the ball, a flyball candidate. Yes, we are holding a "fetching item" above the camera in her newest photos, if you hadn't already guessed!

Her training has also come a long way, too, and Grace can now sit, is working on lie down reliably, and comes pretty nicely when called. She can, however, still be cagey when super focused, and will continue to need practice with being able to listen despite the distraction of things like her beloved frisbee, moving cars, or running dogs.

Grace continues to be a little tense and intimidated when meeting other dogs, and like we suspected she would be, can be a little growly with them in an effort to be left alone. She remains a submissive girl with the 3-4 other dogs in her foster home and seeks to avoid trouble at all costs. She has also come to terms with the feline in the home, so we think she can certainly live with a cat.

With improved health, strength, and confidence, Grace is also shaping up to be tireless girl. Hiking, running, biking, you name it, she's up for it, and soaks up the exercise like a sponge. She did wonderfully on her first backpacking trip this last week and even carried her own doggypack for the long hike out...then came home and wanted to play fetch!! Like a lot of BCs, she can be restless and looks for trouble should she not get enough physical and mental stimulation, so will definitely need an active home, as well as one that will give her guidelines to live by, to keep her happy and safe.

Last but not least, we are pleased to report that with her new-found level of comfort in her own skin, Grace also has become a happier girl...while she is still intense, she doesn't get offended and cry so easily, and she can be quite the silly little character when she feels the urge! She especially loves to do crazy spaz-outs at dinner time, and if you jump around and egg her on, she just goes wild and prances, wiggles, and play bows all over the place!! Most endearing.

Grace continues to show her true colors, and so we'll continue to post updates on these as time goes by. Grace is spayed, fully vaccinated and living in a loving foster home in northwest Wyoming.
