Meet Lilly!
Due to no fault of her own, she was returned to A Journey Home. Her adopters cannot devote the time necessary to owning an animal. Lilly is a sweetheart. She loves to give kisses and get belly rubs. She is very energetic and loves to play. She loves kids and people in general. She is timid with strangers but warms up quickly. She is crate trained. She is working hard on house training and other puppy manners.
She likes chew toys. She does like to pull on her leash when going for walks, so she will need work on that. She will do best with an active, patient family who has the time that is necessary for owning, training, and most importantly loving her.

Lilly's Backstory
Here at A Journey Home Dog Rescue we have been wrestling with this post for about 2 weeks now. We went through the "should we" or "shouldn't we's," but ultimately we decided that it was time to share. We would like to use this story to both educate, but also reflect on our side as well on how we can do better. These two beautiful girls were adopted through our rescue in February of this year. Their adopters decided to take them together, and we truly believed it was a great fit. Unfortunately, they have since been returned to us due to no fault of their own.
We have a policy here at AJH that often gives us some snide remarks and unhappy people, but the policy states: NO SAME DAY ADOPTIONS. In short, that means if you attend one of our events, you cannot just walk in, pick out a dog/puppy, and leave that same day with them. This policy was put in place to prevent the “impulse” feelings and emotions that come along with seeing very cute dogs and puppies. We require all our adopters to fill out an application and go through what would be the equivalent to an interview to do our due diligence that we are placing animals in the very best environment that they deserve. Our system is not fool-proof, as we can see with this situation, but we take placement very seriously for both the family’s well-being, but most importantly for the sake of the dog/puppy.
As for these two, one of the reasons that this family gave for returning them was: “Their sons are in school and used to play with them all the time. They have since lost interest, and now they just play with their friends.”
How very sad for our furry friends that they were so easily replaced. They are the ones that truly suffer as they have no idea what is happening, why they are moving, and why they are now separated. These beautiful girls deserve to live their best life, and right now they are currently in boarding.
We so often stress the commitment it takes when rescuing an animal. We truly want our adopters to feel that this decision is for the duration of the animal’s life, and we want that life to be the best one possible. We chose to leave out names because the point of this post in NOT to shame the adopters and the decision they made. As stated above, knowledge is power and we feel this can be used as an opportunity to educate on the side of rescue that isn’t always so loving and beautiful.
We are going to be providing more information on these girls, but if you are interested in learning more about them – please feel free to reach out. We would love to chat.
As always, with love, - A Journey Home Dog Rescue

A JOURNEY HOME DOES NOT DO OUT-OF-STATE ADOPTIONS ON UNALTERED PUPPIES PLEASE READ OUR PROCESS BELOW BEFORE SENDING AN INQUIRY. THANK YOU!!

Thank you for your interest in adopting!

A Journey Home is a 501c3, all foster/volunteer based rescue. Our rescues are living with families in their homes. We do not have a shelter.
If you are interested in adopting, visit our website www.ajourneyhomedogrescue.org to fill out an application. After your application has been received and given a preliminary approval, you will be contacted by an adoption coordinator who will conduct a phone interview. Final approval will be granted following a successful meet and greet with the entire family. Adopter must be at least 21 yrs old.

A Journey Home does not do out-of-state adoptions on unaltered puppies. Spay/neuter surgery is not done on puppies under 6 months of age. If adopting a puppy under the age of 6 months, we require that the adopter schedules the spay/neuter at our participating vet clinic when age appropriate.

Our standard adoption fee is $300, payable by cash or check. The fee includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative, a free vet visit at one of our participating clinics, and micro-chipping.

First time pet owners will be required to sign up for a puppy/training class at a place of their choice. There will be an additional $100 added to your adoption fee, which will be refunded to you upon proof the class was completed.

Please note that breed and size are our best guesses, while ages are estimated by our vets and are not guaranteed.

PLEASE consider becoming a foster home, and find out how rewarding it can be! A Journey Home provides basic needs, including medical expenses at our participating clinics located in Wheaton, Naperville, and Geneva. You supply the love! High kill shelters are overcrowded with dogs and puppies that need our help. More fosters on our team means we can save more lives!
