My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kokoro who we call “Koko” is a 1.5 year old female Shiba Inu. She was surrendered to a shelter after the family could no longer afford her medical. She has a mysterious illness that had her vomiting her food regularly for some time. She was losing weight and obviously ill. She had been seen by multiple veterinarian, had bloodwork, xrays, and numerous tests. We also had many issues and could not find a root cause. At one point, Kokoro was so thin we were worried for her long-term health. However, some time on our Wellness protocol and Koko is thriving. She hasn’t vomited since September and her bloodwork came back clear. She is on a frozen prepackaged raw diet with supportive supplements and additional fresh foods.
Koko has done great in a multi-dog home. At first she mostly kept to herself. The past month as she has really started to feel better, she has been running and playing chase with the other dogs. Koko can be grumpy and growl at other dogs when she doesn’t want to engage but she thriving in a group environment.

Koko was extremely fearful of people when she first came into rescue. She didn’t come into her foster home the first day and spent the next two days hiding under the couch. Her foster mom even brought food and water to her under the couch. She slowly build her trust. This is also why we had a delay in Koko’s vet appointment. She was so scared of people we couldn’t handle her for her appointments. By the time we had her first appointment, her foster mom was able to hold her through bloodwork without a muzzle or any restraint. Koko regularly comes up to her foster family for pets and even demands pets with a shove of her nose or paw at her fosters. While she has come a long way, we have no doubt that she will have to learn to trust a new family. We are requiring a fenced back yard for her because of the stress she has with handling and walking on a leash. Once she trusts her foster, she is able to walk on a leash but this takes time and she is still anxious. We think that having a home where she doesn’t require daily walks on the street would be best. She is happy and confident in the home but shivers and cowers on trips. No doubt, with time and patience she can enjoy a more active lifestyle.

Kokoro has done well around the resident cat in the home but does chase outdoor cats. We prefer a home with a dog to help her with approaching people.

About Kokoro: Welcome Kokoro to the DC SIR family! She was pulled from a Virginia shelter. Kokoro has medical issues that her owners could no longer afford to identify. She is extremely fearful so we are working on gaining her trust before we handle her for a check up.
