My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Brady is an extremely sweet and affectionate beagle. A Good Samaritan found him wandering in Ohio a few days before Christmas and brought him to the local animal shelter. A month later when Brady’s time was almost up, the shelter contacted BREW. I picked Brady up after the last leg of his journey to the Chicagoland area. Despite the fact that he had traveled so many miles and had changed hands several times that day, there he was surrounded by a group of children, basking in all of the attention he was receiving from them.

Brady arrived into our household with minimal drama and has been accepted by the resident dogs (a very alpha female and a more beta male). He initiates and receives invitations to play with the other dogs. He especially seems to enjoy frolicking in the snow. His favorite sleeping position seems to be when he is on the floor with his legs pushed out behind him (aka “frog legs”). He has virtually no interest in the people or dogs that walk past our home and seems to be a minimal barker.

Brady appears to have been a house dog in his previous life. He dances on his hind legs at the prospect of getting “people food” (a no-no here for the most part), sneaks up on the couch to lie in the morning sun (also a no-no), and gets excited about the prospect of going on a walk. Brady walks reasonably well on the leash, pulling slightly to catch up to the rest of the pack. He walks a straight path without excessive zigzagging or sniffing. At 15 inches tall and 31 pounds, Brady is the perfect lap dog. Don’t let this little guy’s age fool you; he can easily walk two miles! He has a moderate energy level, often getting his second wind in the evening. He frequently stalks and tosses toys while the other (younger) resident dogs are snoozing before bedtime.

In the short time he has been with us, he has already learned not to jump up on us while we are eating at the dining room table. We continue to work on social graces, house training, and crate training. Brady can make it through the night, but we are still honing his workday skills so he can make it through an entire day without having to go potty (his current max is 6 ½ hours). At this point, he would probably do best in a home where he could have a midday potty break. As for overall house training, Brady will sometimes alert you when he needs to go outside; other times not. He seemed to be crate trained until he had an accident in his crate. Since then, he cries and scratches (at length) to get out of his crate. We are working on rebuilding his confidence in his crate and hope to be able to declare him “house trained” and “crate trained” soon.

Overall, we have found Brady to be an extremely loving, trusting, friendly, playful, and overall good-natured beagle who thoroughly enjoys snuggling with and being around people and other dogs. Brady would make a wonderful addition to any family.

UPDATE: Brady is housetrained! Over the last two weeks, Brady has started to come to find us and let us know when he needs to go outside. Also, if he is taken on a 40 minute walk at 5:15 AM with a second opportunity to go out in the backyard at 8 AM, he can hold it for an entire work day (6 PM).
