**PLEASE NOTE: Tuna is not in a Shelter Survivor’s foster home. He is currently living with his family and we are helping them find him a new home. We will forward any questions, inquiries, or applications directly to Tuna’s family and they will respond to you.**

Here is what Tuna’s family wants you to know:

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that we must re-home our sweet 1 year, 10-month-old pit bull named Tuna. Tuna is the dog we have always dreamed of in so many ways. He loves to cuddle and kiss, and he sleeps underneath the covers in between us every night. He is good with people and children. He loves to run and chase balls. We call him “Tiny Tuna” because he is so small, he is fully grown and just under 40 pounds, and he is a true lap dog.

Despite all his wonderful qualities, Tuna is aggressive towards other dogs both on a leash and when presented with new dogs at home. He has been going to doggie daycare twice a week since he was very small and does very well there in a group of 20-30 dogs all in one room together for 8-10 hours a day. Under this unique situation of being without his owners and being outside of his own home, he has done well with dogs he does not know. Additionally, he does extremely well with our family dogs who belong to my brother and sister, as he has grown up with them. He’s gentle and patient with our nieces and nephew ages 2-8.

We have tried various training methods and trainers using positive reinforcement, different methods of introduction, etc. Despite our efforts and some of Tuna’s positive experiences at daycare, he has had instances of aggression that have resulted in biting other dogs. On one occasion he slipped his leader and for the others it was our own ignorance of how to manage him that created dangerous situations. We’re confident that with better training and a controlled environment free of other animals, he can live a cuddly and happy life.

Tuna’s aggression was at its worst when we lived in the city as the likelihood of crossing paths with other dogs on walks was almost guaranteed and he was easily disturbed by the number of people walking their dogs as they passed the front windows of our home. We are currently living with our in-laws while we save money for home of our own, and they have asked us to find him a new home.

Tuna is one of the most loving, snuggly dogs we have ever met. His problem may be rooted in fear and anxiety of other canines. We are hoping to find him a loving home outside of the city where he is the only dog. He tires out easily from exercise but is still quite young, we hope to find him a home with a fenced in yard where he can chase balls for a little bit then spend the rest of the day relaxing inside away from other animals. Tuna is a very low energy, low maintenance dog. We are heartbroken that we must let him go.

Tuna is fully house trained, up to date with all his shots, microchipped and neutered. We are willing to donate towards training or whatever may help find the right home for Tuna. We are willing to travel if there's a home or rescue that has room for our dog. We're also willing to donate towards the housing, training or whatever needs may help find the right home for Tuna.”

To meet or adopt Tuna, fill out our online dog application, or download our Microsoft Word dog application and return it to sheltersurvivors@live.com. It will expedite the process.
