My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

OHHH, Melvin. Melvin is 2 years old and 9.5 lb
He is in the process of a lot of changes and learning how to be a dog. Melvin loves other dogs and is sometimes bad at first impressions when meeting furry friends but he simmers down very quickly and plays with several of the other dogs here in the yard, sometimes 5 to 20 at a time with no issue. Every time a newbie comes in though he has to sniff and nudge and puff his chest and raise his hackles and stomp his feet a bit kicking up the dirt.....all show. Melvin wants to be a macho man but has no follow through. Some of the dogs buy his bologna and bow down to MR MELVIN and they become best friends and Melvin gets to be the dominant one. More often than not, a little 4 lb female chihuahua puts him in his place real fast and his tail is under his butt in two seconds and now he waits on her hand and foot giving her little kisses and letting her have the treats first. He is quite funny as long as you can appreciate his big personality. Most of the dogs here figure him out pretty quickly and he cannot pull anything over on any of them, he acts tough but is really a big baby. Melvin, of course, is a mama's boy. Loves cuddles and is always submissive to people unless you are trying to cut his nails. He will act afraid of you at first but within a few hours, he is belly up in your lap and loves attention, baby talk and kisses. He acts like a little turd at the vet's office. Melvin would probably annoy the crap out of your cats, but would never hurt them. Probably best to not have him in a home with cats, but again if he saw a cat he would not hurt the cat, he may chase them though. Melvin would do ok with older children, I would not really trust him with toddlers. He is kennel trained and knows "kennel up" or "time for bed ". He did mark a couple times when he first got here, again with the machismo, but a couple stern "NO"s and a squirt water bottle ;) he has learned fast. Melvin is a very people pleasing dog so although he has some issues, he is definitely trainable. He wants to be a good boy, you can just tell that no one has put forth the effort to show him how.
