This handsome boy is Joey, a four-year-old pomeranian/chihuahua mix (a "Pomchi")! Joey was found as a stray running down a sidewalk in Brooklyn. His finders took him to the shelter, where he became frightened and shut down. This poor little guy had no clue where he was or what was going to happen to him. Thankfully the shelter reached out to us and he was soon in one of our foster homes.

Joey was found as a stray running down a sidewalk in Brooklyn. His finders took him to the shelter, where he became frightened and shut down. This poor little guy had no clue where he was or what was going to happen to him. Thankfully the shelter reached out to us and he was soon in one of our foster homes.

It takes a few days for Joey to warm up to people. He didn’t even want his foster mom to pet him for the first two days. Joey needs to be allowed to come to people on his own, and not be pressured to engage immediately. On the second day, his foster family sat on the floor, and gave him treats, and before they knew it, he was licking their faces. The third day he was jumping on their laps and seeking attention! Now that he is more comfortable, he is less afraid when greeting new people. His potential family needs to understand that he won’t jump into their arms when he meets them but given time and patience (literally 2 or 3 days) , he is snuggly and affectionate, and he loves to be held and carried. He sleeps next to his foster mom on her bed and likes digging under the covers next to her to keep himself warm.

Joey is about 20 pounds (his pictures make him look bigger) and he is great with other dogs. He is currently living with one medium sized dog and two large dogs, and he gets along very well with them and loves to play. He likes treats and will dance on his hind legs to get them. He has a great personality and when you talk to him his head tilts to the side as if he is actively listening. He also adores riding in the car!

Joey is housetrained, neutered, up to date on all his shots, heartworm negative, and microchipped. He is crate trained and likes to snooze in his crate with the door open, but his foster family leaves him free in the house while they are at work during the day, and he is perfectly behaved. He would be perfect for a family without small children (under 10) that is looking for a young, affectionate companion who will bring them joy and laughter for years to come.

To adopt Joey, fill out our online dog application , or download our Microsoft Word dog application and return it to sheltersurvivors@live.com. It will help expedite the process.
