My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Looking for a loyal guy to kick back and play fetch with? Hugh (or as his foster parents call him, Hughie) is your man. This fun-loving boy is looking for a home to call forever and a family who will never stop tossing the ball for him.

At seven-years-young, Hugh still has lots of energy, and loves nothing more than playing fetch with his beloved ball. He can be a bit clumsy, so he needs a home with lots of space and a fully fenced yard to stretch out in. The more space he has to chase his ball, the faster his tail wags! Hugh does not currently enjoy riding in the car and will need a family that is comfortable loving him from home, or that has the patience to teach him that riding in the car can be fun (think windows down, wind is his ears)!

As far as obedience training goes, Hugh knows the basics (sit, down, paw), but will need a family with some patience to teach him how to respect boundaries when it comes to countertops and furniture. He has shown an eagerness to learn new tricks and loves the mental challenge (and yummy treats) that obedience training brings. While he is getting up to speed on those things, he can easily be put into his crate for some R&R. He is a perfect gentleman once he settles down in his crate (so quiet you can hear a pin drop), and he is fully potty trained. He hasn’t even had a single potty accident while in foster care for the last two months. What a good boy!

Hugh generally gets along with other dogs but will need a family that can give him some one-on-one attention when need be. An aloof, mellow dog could be a best buddy for him, but a dominant dog probably won’t be a good fit. Smaller dogs would also pose some difficulties for this big dude, and he would do best with another sporting breed dog, or a dog similarly proportioned to him.

Due to some past injuries, Hugh is sensitive about his neck and can be protective of it. A family with small children will not be a good fit for Hugh, and adults and older children need to be careful not to make him feel threatened in this area. Hugh was previously owned by a single man, and because of this, he especially enjoys hanging with the guys. A family with a male companion would be a great fit for Hugh (man cave, optional). That said, there’s nothing he loves more than curling up in his foster mama’s lap for some belly rubbin’ and attention. Due to some past issues, Hugh does have a bit of separation anxiety. He needs a family that is willing to spend quality time with him every day – he deserves it, after all.

Hugh is up to date on his routine vetting (vaccines, microchip, 4DX testing, neuter). He did have a mast cell tumor removed from the back of his leg. It was a grade 2 on a scale of 0-10 and was completely removed. His bloodwork is clear and there is no reason to consider him a “hospice” dogs as is sometimes the case. His veterinary feels confident that he will have 5 years of happy life left, and while we know we can never guarantee what can happen, we do agree with the vet assessment in his case and his current medical condition. We always provide full disclosure to someone considering adoption of any GSP in our program. All of his vet records will be provided to his new owner.

Hugh does not hunt and doesn’t have a high prey drive (unless you’re an orange ball). He would fit perfectly with a family that is just seeking a companion to love and be loved. All in all, he’s a happy, go lucky guy with no greater desire than to play ball with his forever family. He just needs someone to toss the ball!
