My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sugar looks like a white 45 lb Kimmer Cur & possible Am. Bulldog mix, very shy and sweet, about 3 years old. She was found in Wildcat Subdivision in Murphy, NC in late July and brought to nearby Lost Dogs Run, so weak from starvation, that she could hardly move. Sugar recovered rapidly and now is a very quiet and calm dog who just likes to hang around, following her foster mom. She was obviously used as a breeding dog in the past. She is now totally vetted, house trained, and heart worm negative. However, in mid August she had three 2 minute seizures within 24 hours and was immediately put on levetiracetam (initially 3 500 mg tablet a day and now a month later 1 tablet a day) which totally stopped the seizures. Her medicine is not expensive and her dosage is 1/3rd the normal dose and has no bad side effects. We will soon try with no tablets to see if there are still no seizures. Her low energy nature would make her a great pet for a retired couple. She is just so sweet and wants to stay near home. Each morning, she is let out to explore in the neighboring woods and is back within a half hour, eager to go back in the house. Our adoption application and contract can be found at http://www.lostdogsrun.com/forms.htm. We ask for a $150 donation at the time of adoption. Before adoption, a home visit and references are checked and a one week trial period has successfully passed. Homes are required to have a fenced yard and the animal must be allowed inside at night. Animals are not allowed to be tied up outside for more than several hours or crated for long periods, except for sleeping at night in the house.

More about this rescue

Our Board has previously volunteered and served on the Boards of St. Francis Animal Sanctuary, The Delta Humane Society of Louisiana, Logan's Run Rescue and volunteered at the Valley River Humane Society Thrift Store and Shelter. Our years of rescue experience have shown us that rescue animals are best served by keeping them out of Shelters. We rely on volunteers to foster them while we vet them and find homes for them. Fostered animals are house trained and socialized before adoption. We actively promote fostering of rescue animals by members of the local community.
