Sweetie is an adorable little female Terrier Mix who is 3 - 4 years old and weighs 10 lbs. Sweetie is being fostered in Tallahassee, FL. Sweetie is heartworm positive. Due to Covid-19, all Florida foster dogs must be adopted by Florida residents at this time. No exceptions will be made.
UPDATED BIO 08/25/2020: Sweetie came into UYR on 05/30 and has settled into her foster home very nicely. She was surrendered by her owner who was unable to care for her due to health issues of her own. Sadly, Sweetie was also not given heartworm preventative in her previous home, and she is heartworm positive.
Sweetie continues to live up to her name and loves everyone she meets. She is a shy little girl, but warms up very quickly and loves loves LOVES attention. Sweetie is house-trained to go on pee-pee-pads and she will also do her business outside if she is given time to walk around and survey everything first. It’s a treat to see that only the mention of her name makes her tail wag so fast it’s a blur!
Sweetie is very obedient, has such a gentle little nature and is full of personality. She still isn’t interested in toys at this time, and may have never been offered toys in her previous homes, but her Foster Mom is engaging her every day with squeaky toys, so hopefully play time will come soon. Right now, the sound of squeaky toys is scary, but she is also sensitive to loud noises, especially thunder. She is wearing a Thunder Shirt which is helpful during thunderstorms that happen daily in Florida. Hopefully she will soon become desensitized to the thunder storms. She has found a safe place where she feels comfortable when the storms are brewing.
Sweetie gets along with the resident dogs in the home although her humans are the most important companions for her. She has not engaged in play with the other dogs as of yet – she is way more interested in being with humans lol. She may enjoy one other dog close to her age and size as a companion, but that is to be seen. In her former home, she was one of five dogs in the home, and she was bullied by another dog only slightly larger than her that had a more enthusiastic personality, so a home with a calm, well-mannered dog will be best for her. She would also be happy being the only dog in the home since she craves human interaction.
Sweetie would be happiest in a home where she wasn’t left alone for more than four (4) hours. She is very much tuned into her persons, and she would be very sad to be left alone for longer periods. Sweetie has been around children in her foster home, and interacts well, but foster mom feels she would be okay in a home with well-behaved children 12+ years.
Sweetie has already begun the treatment protocol established by the American Heartworm Society. She must remain in her foster home until her heartworm treatment is completed – her first Immiticide injection was on 08/03, and she will have the second & third injections on 08/31 & 09/01. Immiticide is an arsenic-containing compound so Sweetie must be kept very quiet with crate rest and restricted exercise during her treatment. She will have a heartworm test 30 days after her last injection and if negative, she will be ready for adoption around mid-October.
Please don’t forget about Sweetie. Sweetie’s heartworm treatment will be approximately $800, so we are reaching out to our angel donors and asking for donations to cover this large unexpected expense. UYR would never turn away a potential foster dog that has tested positive for heartworms, and your donation(s) will enable us to continue to rescue and treat other incoming foster dogs that may be heartworm positive. If you are unable to donate, please say some prayers that Sweetie will be able to endure the upcoming rigorous heartworm treatment without complications.

Sweetie is a delightful little girlie who loves loves LOVES attention! She is so very loving and adores attention from her humans. She is a smart little cookie and is already house-trained to pee-pee pads. She is learning that if she does her business outside, she will get a treat, so we are working on that. She has realized that going outside is great F-U-N and now scampers to the door when Foster Mom asks her if she wants to go out.
