My story

Her adoption is sponsored in memory of Carleen "Sue" Swartz

Delta Dawn and her BFF Velvet have been closely cared for by a retiree, you could say she is the local cat lady. Delta, like Velvet was a stray who had lived outdoors. They were brought indoors over a year ago to be an inside cats. She is still described as a bit skittish, but playful, and likes to be petted when she is at ease. Will need an unrushed adjustment period, but with focused attention, love, & patience, she could be a loving pet. Best with a gentle, understanding person, no young children and would do well with another laid back cat or dog. Would be great if these two could get adopted together!

She could remain an indoor cat (uses litter box, has nice indoor “manners”), but could be an indoor/outdoor cat in a safe, rural setting, NOT near a busy road and must have unlimited access to heated space in cold weather.

Adoption includes spay, vaccinations, felv/fiv combo test (neg). Delta and Velvet are on monthly, topical Revolution for parasite control.

Also included in the adoption is 30 days of Pet First Pet Insurance, and Petco's Free Welcome to the Family Program. This program supports All New Pet Parents and offers Free resources, more than $650 in savings and 24/7 support.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process involves an application, application review, and adoption fee. You are welcome to visit or ask questions about any of our animals for adoption. Animals are in foster homes and can be met there or at a central location. We encourage all members of your family to meet the potential new addition. All animals receive preventative vaccinations, dewormer and flea/tick medication. We also participate in a pre-adoption spay/neuter program which decreases possible litters as well as expedites the adoption policy for the new family!

More about this rescue

Located in beautiful Highland County Virginia, the Highland County Humane Society is dedicated to promoting health, safety, welfare, compassionate care and protection of animals through a cooperative engagement with Highland County, its citizens, and other like-minded animal welfare groups. We are a group of dedicated volunteers and foster homes taking unwanted animals from the public as well as the Highland County Pound and neighboring animal shelters.
Our group consists of animal lovers and each of us believes that every animal deserves a loving home.

The HCHS is completely funded through membership donations, private and corporate sponsors, and fund raising events. Your tax deductible donation provides day to day care, veterinary services, food and shelter for the animals under our protection. We are a 501c3 organization formed in 2012 in response to a need in our county. We welcome any help and assistance you may be able to offer and we’d like to thank everyone who has been so supportive and helpful in our creation.
