My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jewel is approx 3-4 months old and currently about 10 bs. We don't know what her exact breed is or how big she will get. Beagle, catahoula, whippet, italian greyhound, who knows! We don't think she will get that big based on her size now--our best guess is under 35 lbs.

Jewel is an incredibly endearing dog. She's a follower and really wants somebody to guide her. She loves to cuddle (she is sleeping on my lap as I type). She's great with other dogs, even really big ones. And she bonds very quickly.

Jewel is playful but not high energy and has no problem settling down in the house. She would do very well with another dog in the household who she can follow, but she'd also do well as an only dog. Because she can be just a tiny bit unsure at first, it is extremely important that her new family socialize her a lot to as many people, animals, and environments as possible.

Jewel is not an in-your-face kind of dog. She's a little more meek, unassuming and gentle. She sleeps in a crate at night and is still learning the housetraining ropes.

If you're looking for a puppy more on the soft-spoken side, there's simply no way you won't fall in love with Jewel. However, as adorable as she is, please keep in mind that a puppy can be a lot of work and requires an extreme level of commitment. Jewel wants to please and we'd like to see her to a family that will guide her with consistent discipline and boundaries as well as provide sufficient exercise, socialization and of affection. Affection is the easy part though.

If you are interested in adopting Jewel, please give serious thought about whether you can commit to the extra time and care a young puppy requires. Please consider the following:

- Housetraining. Your puppy will need to be housetrained and may have several accidents in the meantime. She may also need to be taken out in the middle of the night and throughout your work day to relieve herself since puppies have smaller bladders.

- Socialization. Your puppy will need to be socialized to as many different people, environments, sounds, sights, smells, animals, etc as possible. Do you have the time and energy to expose her to as much of the world so that she becomes accustomed to different things?

- Mouthing. Keep in mind that your puppy is still teething and may want to put her mouth, including her sharp little puppy teeth, around everything. Yes, that may mean your hands, arms, legs, furniture, shoes, clothing, wires, plugs, books. If you have other pets or children, them too.

- Training. You will need to start at square one for training. Your puppy may not even know how to react when attached to a leash.

Of course, it is a lot of work. But it is even more rewarding if you put the time and effort into the process. Jewel, like any other dog, will brighten every single day. Give her what he needs and craves (discipline, exercise, and affection), and you will be rewarded with infinite love and laughter.

If you are interested in adopting Jewel, please submit a completed application. There is a $275 tax-deductible adoption fee, which helps to offset the numerous medical expenses the rescue incurs. Jewel is being fostered in Sacramento. She is spayed, microchipped, and current on shots. A homecheck will be required to ensure each dog goes to an environment suited to their needs.
