My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs in need. Thank you!

We were contacted about a very frightened female dog who had been found tied to a church door in the Mobile, AL area and brought to the shelter. Clearly, she was someone’s dog and being abandoned on the church steps terrified her. It is heartbreaking to imagine what she thought of being left behind. While at the shelter she curled up on her blanket and was generally shut down as you can see in her pictures. The shelter named her Ruthie.

Ruthie is about 4 years old and had previously been spayed. She appears to have been shaved so we imagine her coat was on the long side and extremely matted. We do not know her breed but she may be part sheltie or corgi based on her pretty tri-coloring. The fur has started to grow back on her body and is mostly cream and white and brown and her fluffy tail is a cream color. Sadly, Ruthie is very overweight, weighing 68 lbs, as a medium-sized dog she should weigh about 48 lbs.

After a couple days at one of our vet partner’s clinics, Ruthie has become a different dog! She has come out of her shell and soaks up the attention the clinic staff gives her. When our lead volunteer visited, Ruthie barked and came right to the door to be let out. When meeting another Sunshine dog, she ran over to him with her tail wagging, wanting to play. She has not yet met a cat. She jumps a little in a friendly way but gets down immediately when told. And she walks pretty well on a leash. One thing Ruthie is not enjoying is her dog food, which is low calorie, to begin her long-term project of regaining her girlish figure. We suspect she dined mostly on people food.

It appears friendly little Ruthie will bond very quickly with her new human(s). She wants to be loved and she needs someone who will be very committed to helping her lose weight. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative. If you understand what it means to truly “rescue” a dog, Ruthie may be the dog for you. Ruthie will be ready to travel north on May 15 and we hope to have a forever home waiting for her!!

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.

Ruthie has an Adoption Pending but she hopes you will consider one of our other great dogs in need. Thank you!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
