My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Roscoe (2 year old male retriever mix)

Roscoe had a hind leg amputation in early-November after a bad break was left too long by his original owners. When Roscoe came to our house to recover, he was VERY unsure of himself. This showed up as growling/barking and then retreating to hide in his doghouse. He has made HUGE strides with the help of a confident pack of dogs and reassurance from humans who also don’t tolerate bad behavior. We are a busy household with a constant stream of kids on and off the property. He does still occasionally get overwhelmed with chaos, and needs to be kenneled to decompress. When properly introduced to new people, he greatly enjoys being loved on and seeks out attention. He is a first class snuggler! Roscoe appears to be kennel and house-trained.

* Great with Dogs: Roscoe lives with a pack ranging from a 110 lb neutered male to a 12 lb neutered male. He is submissive in a pack, and takes his cues from more confident dogs. He has shown some resource guarding of humans toward other animals, but stops when corrected. He absolutely MUST go to a home with a canine playmate!
* Good with Older Kids: Roscoe does well with kids who understand that he can sometimes be overwhelmed, and take time to reassure him. He is currently living with active preteens, and responds well to their friends. Due to his timidness and resource guarding of “safe” adults, I would not recommend him for a home with small children.
* Great with Cats and Farm Animal: Roscoe is completely non-reactive to cats, and often comes into the barn with me. He shows mild interest in rabbits, ducks, and chickens, but has made no attempts to chase them.

To Help Roscoe's Transition
* Give him several days/weeks to get settled and warm up to all the humans in the household. I usually tell people about the 3 days/3 weeks/3 months rule. You'll see dogs settle into their "true" personality, and often see big shifts around those dates as they become more comfortable in their new home. Roscoe needs a lot of reassurance and boundary setting to be his best self.
* Roscoe loves soft toys and rope toys!
* His absolute favorite thing is to snuggle on the couch or in the bed with his humans. He’s a first class snuggler!
