My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

** Dixon is currently in a foster home, and is available for adoption! Email applications@chicagocaninerescue.org to set up a meet + greet! **

Are you a maximalist? Do you like the JUMBO size, the EXTRA SPICY, the ALL-THE-FIXINs? Then Dixon is your man! Dixon has got a BIG personality, a BIG heart, and a BIG appetite! He's a 70 pound 2 year old old German Shepherd mix who came to CCR from Chicago Animal Control where he had been found stray. This guy is is an active, friendly, affectionate, lovable, athletic dude who is clearly ready to be someone's beloved! He's a smart guy who hasn't had a lot of training, so Dixon's ideal home is excited to bring an active, eager dog into their home to show him the ropes. He needs a human who knows how to train! We have no doubt that he will pick up skills fast, especially if there are treats involved, as he has shown us he is eager to please and likes direction! Dixon is good with other dogs who don't mind his rowdy teenager ways, and we think he'd enjoy a dog-social life where he could make dog friends in addition to people friends! However since he requires a lot of focus on training, it would be ideal for him to be the only animal in the home, and just have doggie friends rather than siblings. Because he's so big and doesn't seem to know it, Dixon isn't a great fit for homes with children - he's still pretty jumpy/mouthy and strong, and we're concerned he'd knock someone down without meaning to. We also don't think Dixon is a good option for homes with cats as he does have a strong drive to work and chase little running things!

More about this shelter

CCRF was founded in 2001 to help find permanent, loving homes for homeless dogs in our city. In just over seven years, CCRF has saved the lives of over 2,000 dogs, cats, kittens and puppies.

CCRF now assists the animals that are the MOST vulnerable in Midwest - the dogs and cats that are slated for euthanasia because they are too old, too young, injured, have disabilities, or have simply been overlooked for too long by potential adopters at other shelters.
