My story

I'm smart, I'm pretty and I'm sassy. Yep, I'm Kahlua. I've been with Houston Cares for over a year now and my foster mom says it's because I'm not sweet and I'm not cuddly. Apparently that's what people want in a cat. When I first came to my foster home, I growled nonstop for 5 days. Then, I decided I was safe, and started letting them pet me but only on my own terms would I lay on them. I figured out that I like men much more than women, and I'm ok with kids, dogs, and babies. If I don't like you, I will not hesitate to let you know.I have a fantastic swing and big paws and swatting is fun for me. My foster mom says I have gorgeous teeth, and she knows because I like to growl at her and show them. Despite all of my odd quirks, she loves me and says she thinks I am adoptable, even though the vet that vaccinated me says I am 'untouchable" and visitors say I might be meaner than their feral cats. What can I say, I'm sassy and choosy. I get along with the other cats in my foster home as long as they let me be in charge. Does this bio make me sound like the Purrfect pet for your family? More about this rescue

Houston Cares Animal Rescue (Formerly known as Westbury CARE) is more than just a 501c3 rescue, it’s a community of animal lovers working together to make a difference for animals in Houston. Started as a small group of neighbors trying to help the animals in their neighborhood; CARE quickly grew into a non-profit rescue because the need in Houston is so great. Despite its growth, CARE has aimed to keep its community feel and is built on the idea that it will take a community of Houstonians to make change. It is estimated that there are over a million strays in Houston. We believe change will only happen through a multi prong approach including rescue, education, spay/neuter, and changes to our legislation. We believe that the more the rescue community works together and supports each other the more the animals benefit and the more change will be seen. We are proud to be a small and growing part of the Houston rescue community.
CARE saves hundreds of animals from the streets of Houston each year. While waiting to find their forever homes, animals live in loving foster homes. This means that the animals are able to adjust to life off the streets and, if needed, learn to trust again. The animals receive full vet care and, if needed, they receive behavior training. The care of each animal usually well exceeds their adoption fee and money is raised through fundraisers and donations. We are asked for help for many new animals every single day but have to turn many of them away due to lack of foster homes. Every time we find a new foster or an animal is adopted we can save more animals off the streets that are waiting for their chance at a new life filled with hope and love. We provide all supplies to fosters, including vet care. Fosters are responsible for supplying a safe loving indoor home to the animal while it looks for its forever home. Fostering gives an animal a chance at a new life.
Beyond our foster group we have other active rescue efforts. We have a trap, neuter, return program helping to spay/neuter and maintain feral cats and cat colonies in SW Houston. We also speak to schools and other groups about rescue and are hoping to grow our outreach program.
Everyone involved with Houston cares Animal Rescue is a volunteer. Although the amount of need can be overwhelming, we give our free time to this cause because we believe that together we can make a difference. We know that every animal saved from the streets has their life completely changed through our efforts and we believe that we have the potential to change the future on a much larger scale through our efforts. We invite everyone to join our community of animal lovers and work alongside us to make change in our Houston community.
