My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Luna is a sweet little girl weighing just 6.4 pounds. She is estimated to be 3 years old and is being fostered in Riverview, Florida.
Dogs being fostered in Florida must be adopted within the State of Florida.

Updated Bio 5/31/2022: Meet Luna the Yorkie! This petite girl is such a velcro dog. The scales say she is 6 pounds, but she seems so much smaller! Luna was found as a stray by animal control. Luna is full of love, but due to her unknown history, she does show some guarding behavior and takes a while to trust people. She needs someone who will be understanding and patient with her as she works through her quirks and learns to trust again.

In her forever home, a fence is not required as she enjoys going on daily walks. Luna would do best if she was the only dog in her forever home. Her foster mom has tried her around a few different dogs one at a time and Luna does ok only around chill small dogs, but she can be unpredictable and get snappy as well as possessive at times. Luna thinks she is a princess, and she wants to be the center of her person’s world without having to share her human with another furball. She occasionally displays some guarding behavior, but her foster mom is working on it. Luna loves children, but due to her guarding behavior, her foster mom thinks a home with older children (middle school and up) or no children would be best.

As mentioned, Luna has a lot of quirks. When laying or sitting with her person, if someone comes up to them, she may growl. When meeting new people, 95% of the time, she will bark at them and/or growl at them. When on walks, she barks at other dogs and people. She thinks she is a vicious guard dog when the doorbell rings and when she sees someone outside the window. It takes a while for Luna to trust new people. She seems to like women more than men. She took to her foster mom and the kids right away. It took about 3 or 4 days before she decided that she liked her foster dad. Now, she loves her foster dad and loves cuddling with him! Her foster mom is working on her barking and growling, but Luna’s forever family must be willing to be patient as she works through this.

Luna sleeps in a crate in her foster home. She knows that it is her safe place. She does well sleeping in the bed also, as long as she forever home realizes that she doesn’t know what personal space is. She enjoys sleeping by her foster mom or dad’s head or right next to, practically on top of one of them. Luna routinely gets in her crate every night between 8:30 and 9 pm, all on her own. She cherishes her beauty sleep! She uses a potty pad trained for #1. She does a good job letting her foster mom know that she wants to go outside. She has had 2 #2 accidents inside the house, although every single time she does it in the bathroom. Luna does not like fire hydrants, as she will try to do a long jump to get away from one. She hates thunderstorms and vacuum cleaners. During storms, if she is not being held, she will hide under couches, under beds, back corners of closets, behind pillows on the couch- anywhere small.

Luna loves fuzzy blankets, sitting on the back of the couch, napping, being carried around, going on walks, belly rubs, and chasing squirrels/birds/lizards. You don’t need a bug zapper when Luna is around because she is skilled at catching them with her mouth. She prefers wet food and is not treat motivated. She will only eat a treat if her foster mom puts it on the ground and walks away. Car rides tend to make her anxious, and she just wants to be held. Her foster mom is working on getting her to safely stay in the doggie car seat. Luna likes playing with her stuffed toys but only on her terms. She will play with it by herself but won’t let anyone play with her and the toy. She only started playing with toys just a few days ago. She does not like the squeaker on squeaky toys, as it scares her. Luna does not appear to have separation anxiety.

Once you get past her quirks and earn her trust, she is one of the absolute sweetest, most loving dogs. She is definitely a velcro dog and will make you fall in love with her. She follows her foster mom everywhere she goes when at home. When you hold her, she will nuzzle up by your neck. It’s the cutest thing! Luna needs a patient, loving family who will help her work through her quirks and treat her like the princess she is. She needs a family that will be with her for her whole life- at least 10 or more years.
