My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Let us OFFICIALLY introduce to you Penelope! She also goes by Nel, Pen, Penny. Believe it or not, she does actually know her name - even when she's choosing to ignore it. (Fun fact: She was named after Penelope the Cat from Pepe la Pew).

Penelope is what some might like to call a "doodle" (supposedly a "goldendoodle")... We believe that she is actually part Princess, part Queen of Comfort, part mud-goddess, and part banshee. Penelope was born on 3/10 (11 weeks) and is currently 16 lbs; our best guess is that she will likely be in the 60-65 lb range when grown. This girl has leeegggs (and she knows how to use them).

Penelope was surrendered to us just days after being purchased; as with most BYB, it didn't matter who she went to or whether it was an appropriate match; all that mattered was that they handed over the $$$ for her.

Unfortunately, it was not a good fit for first time pet parents/dog owners and the banshee gene in her is strong. She absolutely abhorrs the crate and will unrelentingly scream and wail; it doesn't matter what tricks you have up your sleeve, she is inconsolable and wants no part in it. Sleep deprivation can be a strong deterent for first time (and veteran!) pet parents!

Penelope is definitely a "dogs dog" - she likes humans well-enough, but she really thrives having other dogs around (currently she is with 4 other dogs and 2 cats). She loves to roughhouse and can always be found close to one of the other dogs. She likes to be near, but she's also not a huge cuddler. She is fiercely independent (and surprisingly good-natured for a puppy), but she also has a bit of separation issues and can be whiney. She loves being outside and will stay out there for hours; she's also an in&out dog and can't make up her mind as to where she'd rather be. She's part Miss Priss, but you can also find her rolling around in the grass, stomping in mud, tearing up sticks - she will really enjoy hiking and going to the park when she is older - she really loves nature! She does not care one bit that she just had her hair done and a blow out.... she will immediately find a way to cover herself in dirt or mud up to her armpits. She's got a big personality and is easy to have around. She is whiney in the car and will try to climb on you and the console no matter how many times you repeatedly tell her to remain seated... tethering her to the seat seems to work well though.

Penelope has been with us since Mother's Day, and in the past three weeks, we have been able to make some progress with her: She still detests the crate; nothing has changed there; most times, if you wait it out (or leave the house) she will settle down eventually, although she will start acting crazy and carrying on again when she hears you come back. This DOES NOT always work though; sometimes she will fuss and scream the ENTIRE time, no matter what. We've been working on short intervals (a couple hours at most) since she IS still a puppy and can't hold it for that long. Since she can't be left in a crate for the whole day (8.5 hours), she has been coming to work with me 3 days a week; she actually does surprisingly well and sleeps next to my desk most of the day and fusses very minimally. She's gotten used to sleeping in an x-pen next to the bed at night; she will fuss and wake you up when she needs to go out (usually 1-2 times per night). She does much better in the x-pen than the crate. IF she has access to a dog door and fenced in yard, she can sleep loose in the house because she'll let herself out - obviously she prefers this, but sleeping with the door open every night isn't always ideal. She is doing good with potty training and has had minimal accidents; again, access to a dog door (or open patio door) will guarantee 100% success of this - when the door is closed, she will sometimes try to paw at the door to get out but if you're not close enough to hear/notice, she will find a rug to go on. She will always paw at the door when she wants back in the house. She plays as hard as the bigger/older dogs, and always finds a way to get herself dirty. She had her first "grooming" the other night - while she handled the bath as well as can be expected, she still has a lot of work to get used to the blowdryer (it's loud and scary - we can't really blame her). Nail clippings are a work in progress. She currently sleeps a lot during the day (it's fantastic), and early evening she becomes a wild woman, before taking another nap and then satisfying her second-wind.
