My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Peter's Facebook Page

Peter is a very handsome Orange and White American Field Bred English Pointer. I listed him under the GSP prefex as he has similar characteristics to a clingy Shorthair. His life was in danger when he was surrendered to an over-crowded shelter in Western Illinois in early June. I was also told he was around 6 years old but he seems a little younger to me. Sadly he suffered some neglect which includes a heartworm diagnosis and he is also being treated for Rocky Mountain spotted fever. He started our heartworm slow kill the middle of June and is doing great.

He is feeling a lot more comfortable around new dogs, and his playful side is really coming out. He loves sqeaky toys and playing tug and tag. He seems to really like smaller dogs too. Peter absolutely LOVES kids and would love a home where he could have a big family. His behavior is much more similar to German Shorthair Pointers and he prefers to be inside rather than out. He is gunshy and will never be a hunting dog. He also will need to be indoors during fireworks season.

We are looking for a foster to adopt home in the Chicago area and while he loves to play with his foster buddies, he would be content as an only dog too. He needs a safe traditionally fenced in yard- no invisible fences-- he is too sensitive.

The cost to help a dog like Pete to come through heartworms and tick borne disease complications can be close to $1000 or more with follow up blood work, medications and extra vetting. We welcome donations for his support at www.illinoisbirddogrescue.org and VENMO @illinoisbirddogrescue
