My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Duchess von Hartwig is a stunning 5 month old German Shepherd.

Hi, my name is Duchess and I’m only 5 months old. My owner had to give me up because they were not allowed dogs where they live, but lucky for me Westside took me in! A nice lady picked me up and took me home and told me I could stay with her and her pack until I found my very own forever home! I was a bit scared at first because her dogs were soooo big, but I soon realized that they were nice and now I follow them around trying to give them kisses. I love sleeping on a soft doggy bed next to my foster fur-siblings in my foster mommy’s bedroom while dreaming of my forever home. My foster mommy says I am a really smart girl since I sit and lay down when she tells me to and even shake her hand, but who wouldn’t when she gives me yummy treats in return! My favorite thing is to be wherever my foster mommy is and I love to snuggle her while she watches TV or reads a book and get belly rubs, oh how I love belly rubs!! I even met some cats and didn’t mind them too much. Would you like to be my forever family?

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
