Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Heidi von Heist is a gorgeous, 7-8 month-old German Shepherd. This lovely lady is young — she still needs some time to grow into both her ears and confidence. Mid-energy Heidi is shy at first, but there's no mistaking her love for life once her tail starts wagging. After taking in her surroundings, she loves meeting new people and dogs (the latter she greets with excited kisses). This black-and-gold beauty loves off-leash and playtime but would prefer to keep her social circle to dogs and people only — cats should not receive an invitation to these gatherings. Heidi is more than happy to let her human lead the way; she is submissive and gentle. She takes treats with a charm-school air of politeness and is happy to sit with (or on) you, receiving pets.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
