My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, my name is Fernando. I am approximately 2.5 years old and weigh 70 pounds. I am a very handsome and charming boy. I have a LOT of energy and need a family with experience to help train me. Good thing I'm smart and a quick learner. I am active and LOVE my chew toys.  I love tennis balls and playing fetch too. Due to my energy level and size, I would do best in a home with adults only. I love belly rubs and will sit in your lap for hours getting pet! I'm good with other dogs but NO cats for me - I think they're fun to chase. I am protective of my humans and need to be properly introduced to new people so that I know we can be friends. I've been at Paws4you for one year, way too long for a handsome pup like me! Adopt me!

FERNANDO SPENT TIME AT A FOSTER. PLEASE SEE FOSTER FEEDBACK BELOW!

Nando (as we call him) is very sweet. He loves, loves, loves belly rubs.

NO CATS!!

As you know from the 2 beds he obliterated, he is a prolific chewer so we always have chew toys for him. Yesterday, I got him a squeaky lamb that he loves. I also got him an orthopedic bed for the crate for him to sleep on that he really loves. He did not chew it up and laid on it even when the crate door is open.

His behavior has improved greatly. He does not jump nearly as much as he did when he first came home. That being said, he is a little mouthy (not with bad intent) and after playing with him for 10-15 minutes, he gets worked up and jumps and has nipped/scratched me numerous times. We really need to work on that.

He has decompressed and seems very happy.

No possessiveness with toys or food (but he is the only dog in the home and hasn't been tested with other dogs around his toys)

He is very smart, a quick learner and very protective.

So far he has “met” several dogs in the neighborhood and has gotten along very well with all of them. So, that is good.

He went in the pool once and seemed to really enjoy it but hasn’t gone back in and I haven’t tried to get him to go in.

We took him to breakfast yesterday. He did well despite the over stimulation.

He is fully house broken. Other than peeing on my son’s bed (no idea why he did that), he has had zero accidents.

He is not allowed on the furniture and is pretty good about that.

On walks, he will pull if he sees something he wants to chase, like a squirrel. He is strong, so an older person should not walk him. He also is on a mission to find things to eat when he walks. I am constantly taking stuff out of his mouth (he lets me put my hands in his mouth with no problem).

Also, he only barks when he is protecting our house. Otherwise, he is quiet.

When meeting new people, we will restrain him on a leash and let him greet the people and keep him from jumping up on them and introductions are done inside the home.  Strangers need to be introduced as friends. Otherwise he barks and is protective. Once introduced, he is ok.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

There is an adoption application used as a pre-screening tool (available on paws4you.org/application), references are required and house visits are made by volunteers. We request a donation with every adoption which includes sterilization, microchip & registration, current vaccinations and a heartworm/ehrlichia test. The adoption donation covers the boarding and medical expenses incurred on all rescues, not just one.

More about this rescue

PAWS4you Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer 501(c)3 animal rescue organization based in Miami, Florida. Our top priority is to save animals from euthanasia at Miami-Dade Animal Services. An average of one hundred animals are destroyed every day at this county shelter! Rescued animals vary from being sick, injured, homeless and surrendered to simply lost. We give these animals a safe environment, professional medical care, hope and lots of love. Our animals are sterilized, vaccinated and ID micro-chipped. Some require major surgery from a specialist to repair broken limbs while others may need additional rehabilitation time and specific medical care - ranging from bordetella (kennel cough) and skin infections to cherry eye and heartworm treatments. Once Paws 4 You Rescue commits to helping an animal, we seek the best quality treatment available - taking no shortcuts. Our dogs stay at veterinary clinics, boarding facilities and foster homes until they find their forever families.
