My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MEET BROWNIE!

Brownie has been enjoying the safety and care for some time now at the home of the founder of ADR.org here on Orcas Island, WA -but in confidence, he told me recently why there is no home for him – yet.
He would really like to have his own home with HIS Human{s).
So, what are you waiting for- I know YOU are out there!
I am a neutered Lab/ American Staffordshire mix, and about 7-8 yrs. old. As weight I will bring 48lbs to the scale. I am up to date with vaccinations, healthy, neutered, and microchipped. I do not have health issues.
I have been living and interacting with other dogs (males and females), and I am used to be around cats, but if I could choose my best next friend then I think a playful and energetic female would hit my spot.
My personality is shy and reluctant but an active female who runs the show – I think I can fall for that idea! :)
I came from an abusive home where I was reprimanded already as a young dog or puppy - physically and was yelled at a lot - and from an early age on.
Fear is still on my side. Hence still now sometimes it can happen that I fall into the fear/flee mood when a situation that I am going through now reminds me of my earlier years.

As a puppy I was kept mostly in a dark shed, when the door opened - I just ran out. But then, when it got scary for me, I ran back into that dark place just to feel safe again.

What effect is has on me still, you might ask...well, where I have been living now here, I feel comfortable so I would find my way back home. On the other hand, if I ran away though in an area that I do not know yet, I would feel lost and I would not find a home by myself. I would not react to anyone calling my name and searching for me- I would hide and eventually not survive.

I do not ask for a lot of exercise and hour-long walks, but frequent walks would be nice, and a solid fenced yard where I can see the other side of the fence would be nice, too. I am not a city dog, nor a high-rise apartment dog.

If you need to know more stories about me, and background info or videos, the founder of ADR.org would be so happy to share those with you on request.
If you are interested, PLEASE send an email to: ADR@animaldefenserescue.org (this is the email address) so that the founder of ADR.org can connect with you via a phone call.
WOOFLY,
Brownie

2.

Interview

a 45-60min phone call will follow once the potential adopter has emailed the application back.

Additional adoption info

Adopters will request an application by sending an email to : ADR@animalDefenserescue.org

Each prospective owner fills out an adoption application. All applicants must live in WA (exceptions are possible), and we ask that children in your home are at least ten years old. We usually have limited information of history of our rescue dogs and are therefore very careful about placing them in households with children.
We require that everyone in the immediate family, including your current dog (if you have one) come to the appointment to meet your potential new dog. Adopting a dog is a big family decision and requires a commitment from everyone.
At the appointment, we will help you assess whether the dog is a good match for you and family or not.

Before you bring your new dog home, you must sign an Adoption agreement with Animal Defense Rescue. In addition, a $ 375$ adoption fee is requested. The adoption donation is non-refundable.
Please remember that adoption contributions barely cover our expenses and only defray the costs. Additional donations are greatly appreciated and will help us continue our life-saving work.
Step 4: Post Adoption Follow Up
Our goal is to help you enjoy life with your new dog to the fullest extent possible. If issues arise, or you just need some good advice, we are happy to do follow-up counseling by telephone or in person. We can also suggest local dog trainers.

More about this rescue

AnimalDefense Rescue is a small non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing primarily dogs from high-kill shelters in mostly CA, as well as homeless, lost and abandoned animals in WA , and rehoming from owners who can no longer care for them for important reasons. By building and working with the rescued dogs at her home, the founder and president assures asessment, training and rehabilitation . ADR.org works with local veterinarians to make sure future adoption homes will have a clean and complete health record for the adopted dog, ADR.org finds well-matched, and carefully screened adopters and adoption homes to ensure the dog will NEVER be returned to a shelter again in his lifetime.
AnimalDefense Rescue will serve as a resource to pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training, and good nutrition.
