Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Maverick – UMDR# 022-0703
Fostered by – Samantha and Drew M.
Maverick’s Rescue Was Sponsored By Kerri Spallino
Maverick is a smart and easy-going 6.5 year old, 70 lb, Labrador Retriever Mix. He was rescued from a shelter in the United States. He has a huge love for his ball and could play fetch for hours. He is looking for his best friend to walk through life with. Maverick has shown he has a big heart, and doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. Maverick came with special needs due to his MAJOR skin trauma and loss of hair. He has recovered with medication, and allergy medicine and does best on a fish based diet. Maverick does not need to be leashed when meeting new dogs, and is calm with minimal reaction. He would prefer to sniff them first, and has a habit of humping when he gets too excited.
Here’s What Maverick’s Foster Family Has To Say About Him
Maverick is the most endearing, loyal soul, who is looking for his best friend. He loves his humans and he wants to go on his walks, play ball all day long and cuddle any time day or night. He is more apt to be attached to the person who spend the most time with him. He always makes me laugh. His coat and skin have improved greatly, it is full and healthy now, with one remaining rough patch on his neck. He really is a very good boy. Easy for someone who is new to dogs. His allergies are in hand with a fish diet, coconut oil and medication. He also has some lumps that have been seen by the vet, and should go down with time. He has a moderate level of energy and likes to play but he is not overly demanding. His age of 6.5 is about accurate and he is low shedding.
Maverick is friendly, loving and kind with everyone. Maverick will woof to greet people, and prefers to go to them first. He has not shown anxiety or fear, and tends to be a curious George. Maverick will hump and try to figure out dominance with humans and dogs, which can take some working through. This tends to happen when he gets over excited, for example, when another dog has his ball and they are playing chase. He isn’t bothered with other animals and doesn’t mind them, and he loves his humans most. We have not seen how he is with cats or small kids.
Maverick’s level of energy in the home is low to moderate. He is overall easy going and quiet in the home. When it comes to food he is opportunistic, and will eat food left at his level, and will look for scraps. Maverick is fine being left at home alone and has been left 4-5 hours and did great. His favourite things to do are cuddling, playing ball, going for walks, and swimming with a life jacket.
Maverick knows his basic commands such as sit, down, stay, drop it, off, etc. He is also fully house-trained. We are working on his leash training and walking with a harness helps. He is a gentle giant and doesn’t realize his size at times. He does well meeting new dogs on his walks, good and friendly. We have used the crate and he was great in it. I would highly suggest crating or tying him in the car otherwise he would love to join you up front. We have only tried calling for him to come back off leash around the house and in the garden. He has done well and could learn to come on command with practice. He is very smart and does well with training treats.
Maverick is a great dog. He is looking for his best friend, someone who will play and cuddle with him. His health is still improving and his allergies and skin still need some daily care. I would love to see him with someone who will walk with him. He just fits that plod along lifestyle and has been enjoying his foster mom’s job as a dog walker and puppy sitter.
