Rufus (formerly Jaelen) is back and ready to find his forever adventure buddy! This 6-year-old Retriever mix spent a year and a half in a loving home, where he proved himself to be a smart, fun, and loyal companion.
What Rufus loves: • Car rides with the windows down • Long walks, hikes, and even runs • Chew toys galore • Showing off his tricks — sit, down, come, and paw!
He’s house-trained, independent, and always up for an outdoor adventure. He’s got a little mischievous streak (trash can raider alert), but that’s part of his charm.
Rufus did well with the family dog in his previous home, though he can be selective with unfamiliar dogs. A meet-and-greet is recommended for any future dog siblings. He will chase outdoor cats, birds, and wildlife — so a secure backyard and attentive handler are a plus.
He can get vocal when he’s excited or wants attention, especially in the kennel, but he settles well in a home environment.
Rufus is the perfect match for an active adopter who wants a loyal sidekick to explore the world with. Come meet Rufus and see if he’s the companion you’ve been searching for!

Additional adoption info
We encourage everyone interested in adopting a new pet to come visit the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter to view the wonderful selection of cats, dogs and small animals we have available for adoption. When you see an animal you are interested in, come in as soon as possible as we are first come, first serve and are unable to place HOLDS on pets over the phone.
Speak to an Adoption Counselor at our Adoption Center regarding your interest to adopt and they will advise you of the Hold and Adoption process. All pets adopted from our facility are microchipped, spayed or neutered and vaccinated for Rabies prior to being released to the adopter. This is required by Texas State Law for any animal adopted from an animal shelter or rescue group. We do allow out of area adoptions as long as the selected pet is old enough to receive these services prior to being released to the adopter.
