Hans von Helmstadt is a beautiful, 2.5-year-old Shepherd/Husky mix with a beautiful speck of blue in his eye. Handsome Mr. Hans would make the perfect running partner or playmate for the family. His prior family (which included a 7 year-old child) only had great things to say, describing him as a "good dog" who is "so sweet." At the rescue, Hans comes out of his kennel happy and ready to start the day, and is curious about all the sights and smells around him. He meets dogs well on leash and even tries to play with them, never missing an opportunity to make a new friend. In his playgroups, he is a great greeter and just seems to be the happiest pup ever whenever he is surrounded by people and dogs. (But he's a no for cats.) He even shares his kennel with a doggie roommate! Always a goofball, he wants to clown around to get your attention and shows off his “sit” for treats. This boy would be so happy to go on a hike with you or run along the beach playing fetch. Hans can’t wait to have you over!

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.

Adoption fees vary with each dog and typically range from $150 to $500. They are set, taking into account the dog's age, training level, temperament, if they’re newly arrived, medical condition(s) (if any) and other factors. Adoption fees are used not only to rescue and place the dog you are personally adopting, but to aid in the future rescue and rehabilitation of other deserving dogs. Adoption fees are necessary; without fees, our rescue efforts would quickly come to an end. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, and up-to-date vaccinations.
