My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

9/7/23 Foster Mom Update: Bogey is doing extremely well! He is a great, great dog! I have not seen any issues at all with him. He really enjoys being with and playing with (my dog) Mack so much so that I think he could do well in a home with a dog for him to play with. I would highly recommend Bogey to anyone.

Bogey's Story: Bogey is a BEAUTIFUL "black golden" boy who is estimated to be about 20 months old. When his original owner could no longer care for him, he ended up in a Baldwin County, AL shelter. Bogey was rescued by Sunshine and placed with a loving family in Connecticut. Sadly, because he cannot help himself from chasing the resident kitty, Bogey finds himself in need of a new home.

This little boy loves playing outside and is dreaming of a large physically fenced in yard where he can run and play. In his current home he runs right through the invisible fence. Bogey is a young dog with high energy and is eager to learn new things and may love being an agility dog. Bogey needs a strong, patient, experienced adopter who is willing to take the time to continue to work with him on being the best he can be.

Bogey is described as "sweet and playful." He loves to be petted, and with his sleek and lustrous black coat, you will never want to stop petting him. His photos do not do him justice – trust us when we say this boy is stunning! Bogey's smile lights up the room and his presence will light up your life! With some additional training Bogey will be an excellent walking partner, ready to start the day with a morning stroll.

Bogey is selective with other dogs. Overall he does better with outgoing dogs rather than submissive ones but would probably be best in an only dog home, getting all of the attention he so rightly deserves.

Bogey is being fostered in MA, where he is continuing to work with a trainer on his skills and confidence level. His perfect forever home would be where he is the only dog with an active family who will have time to play with him and tire him out.

Bogey weighs about 55 lbs., is neutered, heartworm negative, micro-chipped and up to date on vaccinations. If you are an active family looking for a happy companion dog to share in your adventures, Bogey might be the perfect fit for you!

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.

If you would like to be part of Bogey's rescue story, and you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact Michelle to be considered to adopt this incredible dog.

Black Dog Syndrome
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by an adoption website, member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on the website.
You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these dogs and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
