My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Abel, a TLRD favorite, is a big sweetie pie that charms everyone he meets! He’s about 50 lbs., is just over 2 years old, is fully housetrained, knows how to wait, and looks to his people for direction.

Abel’s devoted foster family wants to share that Abel takes time to trust and does require patience, but “when given his space, he will warm up and be the best little bobble bud that anyone could ask for” and “will give you more love than you can imagine.” Abel can be goofy, and his foster family says, “don’t let his inability to move like other dogs fool you; he has a level of independence like no other!” He’s so determined, and while he can be stubborn when it’s time to leave the park, can you really blame him? It’s so fun there! Abel is an expert cuddler who shows off his “cutest little baby snore when he is sleeping hard,” though he makes almost no noise otherwise! He also loves stroller rides, car rides, and park adventures (he goes everywhere with his foster family), and he’s even great in the bath!

Abel gets around relatively well, but sometimes he needs a bit of help because he has cerebral hypoplasia (which means his cerebellum didn't develop properly). This doesn’t change what a loveable and sweet boy he is, just how he moves, and if you check out his videos, you’ll see how much progress he’s made. Abel also doesn’t see well, so moving slowly around him and toward him helps him avoid getting startled.

This sweet boy is bound to charm his way into your heart as he has all of ours! He’s been so lucky to find a fantastic foster family, and he’s looking forward to getting equally lucky with his forever family. Please fill out an application today!April 26, 2024, 1:49 pm

Additional adoption info

All of our animals come fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered (if old enough), and microchipped. Puppies and kittens will be spayed/neutered and have all shots when they are old enough. There is an Adoption application, a quick phone interview to make sure it is a good fit, a meet and greet with the dog, then a home check, and an adoption contract. We ask for a $400 donation for adult dogs, and $500 for puppies at the time of adoption so that we can save other dogs from the shelter. More about this rescue

Dogs are man's best friend, but it is not always the other way around. The Little Red Dog was founded in memory of a little red American Pit Bull Terrier who did not make it. If you are familiar with the Michael Vick dog fighting case chronicled in The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption. The Little Red Dog was brutally beaten to death by Vick and his cronies because she didn't want to fight.

The Little Red Dog rescues dogs; red, blue, tan, white, brown, black and all colors in between. We do not discriminate against ANY breed; that's because we are a real rescue, and we will help as many animals as we can. Our primary goal is to get them into loving homes. Our hope that some day all of them make it, but most of all, we will never forget the Little Red Dog and many others who did not.
