Meet Ellie. She has a sweet soul and is looking for a family who will love her and nurture her as she grows up.

In mid-June, CRT got an emergency call from Dallas Animal Services. They had found a very pregnant Mom loose in Dallas. They came in the next morning and she had given birth to two puppies. Moms and puppies are high risk in a shelter (due to animals who come into the shelter with all types of diseases). DAS asked if CRT could help with this family and we rushed over to get them. Ellie was the Mom who was captured and gave birth. She was a loving Mom and did a great job in raising her two puppies (Paula and Stevie). Her puppies have been adopted and now it is Ellie’s turn!

Ellie had little to no socialization when we first got her. Who knows how long she had been running in the streets, fighting for survival. Even though Ellie was an innocent puppy herself (probably a little over a year old), she was apprehensive around people. We were so sad to see this as the early puppy years should be happy go lucky! The great news is that Ellie is adjusting well to life. She still has some trust issues with her humans to work thru but she is moving forward and that makes us so happy. We are looking for an experienced family to adopt Ellie that can be patient as she continues to grow and mature into a great companion!

Ellie gets along great with the other small dogs in her foster home. She loves to run and wrestle and tumble. Ellie enjoys going into the back yard and running zoomies as well as chasing squirrels. Ellie also loves toys of all kinds. Every day she will get a toy or two out of the toy box and play with them. We love to see the joy she exhibits as she carries the toys around the house. She also is still working thru some inappropriate chewing but that is getting better with time.

Ellie is shy when she meets new people. She will likely stay about 2-3 feet away from her new family as she settles in. Ellie wants to be loved, but she is timid. If you try to force it, she will run from you. Ellie will crawl up into her foster parent’s lap at night for some cuddling. She loves to sneak up in bed while her foster Mom naps, and will cuddle closely with her. Ellie does enjoy following her family from room to room so she does not miss any activity.

Ellie is super smart. She is potty trained. Ellie has learned to use the doggy door in her foster home. She does well going potty outside as long as her family keeps her on a consistent schedule if no doggie door is in place. She also does great on pee pads but prefers outside. At night, Ellie sleeps in a dog bed in a crate. We have just begun leash training her.

Our vet estimates that Ellie is about 1 to 1 1/2 years old. She is young and has a young dog’s energy. Ellie weighs about 10 pounds and is very sturdy. Ellie is tri-color: black, tan with a tiny bit of white. She has adorable floppy ears. Sometimes one or the other is up and really cute. She has the most beautiful brown eyes.

The perfect home for Ellie would be one with experienced Chihuahua owners who are willing to be patient as she adjusts. We think she would do best with another dog to learn from. Ellie would do better in a home with a yard. She will alert when she hears strange sounds. The yard needs to be very secure because if she ever escaped she would simply revert back to her previous semi-feral ways. Her behavior as a family pet will take months to years to cement in to place. This sweet girl needs a family whose work schedule is no more than 8 hours away from home, especially in the beginning while she is adjusting. Ellie is also a door darter. A secure wood fence as well as a secure barrier at the front door of her forever home is an absolute must. Her foster mom is very experienced with dogs like Ellie and can be as hands on as needed during her transition to her new home.

Ellie is being fostered in the Dallas, Texas area. If she sounds like the new best friend you’ve been looking for, please fill out an application! Our CRT adoption form can be found at: http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/

Ellie is spayed, micro chipped, up-to-date on shots, HW negative and on heartworm prevention. She is ready to join a loving family – could that family be yours?
