Meet Junior! He is a sweet and adorable 3 year old pit mix. The shelter contacted us after he was with them for about three months. They tried very hard to find an adopter for him, since he is perfectly behaved, housebroken, and loves people and dogs, however, this poor boy is vision impaired, and was constantly overlooked. He does see some movements and can sense the difference in light and dark, but when we took him to the veterinary ophthalmologist they diagnosed him with PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy). It is not painful, there is no cure, and he will eventually lose all sight. He does not need any medication, although there are vitamin supplements that the ophthalmologist said might help slow the progress of the disease. Dogs don’t go through the same psychological issues as humans do when they lose sight, and since dogs rely heavily on sense and smell, and the vision loss is gradual, they adapt very well.

Junior is the bravest dog we have ever seen, and smart too! Although he can be a little tentative when meeting new people or exploring new places, he learned the layout of his foster home within two days. He jumps on and off the bed (he loves sleeping with his foster mom), and he has mastered running at full speed down the hallway and leaping into “his” chair! He goes up and down about 5 steps to get out into the backyard, and he is now a pro at that too. It looks like he is prancing when he walks, but he is really lifting his feet up high to avoid any unforeseen obstacles. It’s adorable!

Junior is a wonderful and affectionate dog. He is being fostered in a home with three other dogs (male and female, large and small) and he gets along perfectly with them. In fact, he follows the other dogs cues which make it easier for him to learn new things. He plays with them and sleeps with them (when he is not cuddling with his foster mom). His foster family makes sure not to move any furniture or leave large objects out that he could trip over. He goes for walks in the neighborthood, plays in the yard, runs around the house, rides in the car, and does everything a sighted dog can do.

Junior is about 50 pounds, neutered, up to date on all his shots, heartworm negative, and microchipped. He is completely housebroken and although his foster family crated him for the first few weeks, he no longer needs a crate and is perfectly behaved when left alone. We think Junior would do best in a family that has one or more dogs. He loves people of all sizes, however, he needs a family without small children that may startle him. He is an awesome dog, and we are so excited to help him find his forever home!
