My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gentle and sensitive but with an endearing cheeky streak, Sophie exudes happiness. Her antics will keep a smile on your face too!

Sophie is one of 8 siblings raised in the same foster home since they were 1 week old, along with her mom. Sophie is the last puppy to be adopted (through no fault of her own). Sophie is a gentle soul that seems to do well with adults and kids. She loves giving out kisses (licking).

Sophie loves her big yard and playmates. She will wrestle and chase her foster buddy Alfie at top speed around the yard, but when she thinks he’s gaining the advantage, she’ll take refuge right at her foster mom’s feet. She’s always the last to follow mom inside when playtime is over and often play-bows at her favorite playmate, Alfie, trying to entice him back outside! Sophie’s natural love of companionship, independent as she can be, means she soon scratches at the door to say “ready now!” Then she greets everyone as though parted for days.

Sophie’s clever too — she’s figured out that looking back and forth from door to foster mom will usually get the door opened. Sophie’s house-training has been faultless for some months now and she sleeps uncrated near foster mom and other dogs. Her beautiful medium coat is easy to maintain with a weekly brushing.

Sophie would probably be delighted to get daily walks but currently she is well-exercised and leash-free in her foster mom’s yard with a variety of dog play mates. She loves carrying around a few favorite over-sized toys and Benebones but has no interested in chasing balls or toys generally. She loves watching the activity in her neighborhood. She also loves leaping into your lap a few times a day for a good cuddle. Sophie’s so bouncy and agile, she’d probably make a champion agility dog.

If you would treasure this loving young dog and can commit to providing a devoted forever-home where her health and happiness are priorities, please complete an application for Sophie.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

All of our adoptions begin with a visit to one of our adoption events. The adoption coordinator and/or the pet's foster parent will review the applications received. The applicant (if any) whose responses best fit the needs of the particular pet will generally be contacted within a week to schedule a home visit. A vet check and personal reference is also required prior to visiting your home. Our non-refundable adoption fee is $250 for dogs, $85 for kittens ($150 for a pair of kittens), and $75 for an adult cat. The fee covers spay/neuter, core vaccines (distemper and rabies), deworming, microchipping, and the general care of the animals. Per our contract, if you cannot keep your adopted pet for any reason, it must be returned to our program. We will try to find it a new home.

Go meet their pets

We don't have a central shelter facility, so the best place to meet our adoptable cats and dogs is at our adoption shows! If you have previously filled out an application, please bring it with you to the show! Please e-mail with any questions. We cannot guarantee that an animal you want to meet will be at the show. Please check www.pgspca.org -> adopt -> adoption_show_attendees the day before the show and we will do our best to let you know if he/she will be there!

We hold two adoption events each month, on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2 pm.

More about this rescue

The PGSPCA is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues and fundraising events.

We have three main objectives:

• To reduce the number of unwanted litters of dogs and cats through our progressive spay/neuter program – We have altered more than 20,000 animals over the past five years, many of them at no charge;

• To prevent cruelty to animals and all animal suffering through humane education, neglect and cruelty investigations, protective legal action, and an active dog and cat adoption program – We receive about 1,000 calls a month for cruelty investigations, spay and neuter assistance and adoption requests;

• To protect all animals against suffering and abuse through education on legislation affecting the protection of all animals – We regularly educate the public and provide testimony about animal welfare to county and state legislators.
