Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

An online adoption application is available on the HSFC website and should be completed and submitted. Veterinary checks are done as part of the approval process. A staff member will be in touch with the potential adopter within a few days of receiving the application. A contract is put into place once the decision is made to adopt and a match is found. All HSFC dogs, cats, and rabbits are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. The adoption fees for the animals in our care are minimal, especially compared to the unconditional love and companionship adoptees will receive in return. Fees for our animals are posted on our website under the adoption section.

Go meet their pets

There are several ways you can meet some of the animals that we have for adoption.

Cats, rabbits and small mammals can be viewed at 4057 Chain Bridge Rd, Fairfax, VA 22030. Please call (703) 385-PETS for an appointment.

Dogs and horses reside at our farm in Centreville, Virginia and are shown by appointment only.

The HSFC invests a tremendous amount of emotional support in each of our animals and we are dedicated to finding them the best possible homes for their particular needs. When you adopt an animal from us, you must sign a legal contract stating that you will comply with full knowledge ALL of our policies.

More about this shelter

Established in 1968, the Humane Society of Fairfax County (HSFC) was formed by concerned citizens as a non-profit organization to rescue and protect both domestic and wild animals from abuse, neglect, abandonment, and cruelty. As a young organization with a handful of volunteers, money was tight and animals in need were plentiful. The dedicated group of volunteers held bake sales, yard sales, and distributed donation cans throughout the county in an effort to pay for the ever increasing expenses needed to provide for the animals in our care.

Over the years, things have changed tremendously. The handful of volunteers has grown hundreds of dedicated individuals who give their time to help whenever and wherever needed. The bake sales and yard sales eventually gave way to a thrift shop called Second Chance and located at 4057 Chain Bridge Rd., Fairfax, VA 22030.

In December 1994, a very generous and caring individual donated two office buildings in the City of Fairfax to the HSFC. The larger building houses our administrative offices enabling us to help the public with their animal concerns in a more timely and efficient manner. Additionally, the building serves as our cat adoption center. Here the animals are not kept in cages, but have their own deluxe rooms which allow them a real chance to show off for prospective adopters.

It had always been our greatest desire to have our own shelter one day, and because of the generosity of many special people, our dream has come true. The HSFC purchased 13 acres in Centreville, VA in July 2002 and has a barn that houses the horses and a state-of-the-art kennel that houses the dogs.

While many of our goals have been reached there is still so much to do and so many animals that need our help. Please take a moment to browse through our site and see if there is some way you can lend a hand to help us in our ongoing mission to care for homeless and abused animals.
