Welcome Carter!

Meet the newest (adoptable) husky addition to the Athens Canine Rescue family, Carter! Born in March of 2017, he’s the most spry five year old husky you may have ever met. He weighs in at around 50 pounds, give or take a few depending on dinner!

Carter has been with our program for a few months now, but was unavailable due to being treated for heartworms. He has officially been declared heartworms free and is now ready for his forever home! He has no special medical needs other than needing to be on monthly heartworm preventative (as all dogs should be!)

Housebreaking, Crate-Training, and Commands

Carter is housetrained! He sleeps through the night (no midnight pee breaks here!) and even knows to use the bells to signal that he has to go outside! As far as the crate goes… Carter is a bit of a canine houdini. With that in mind, he does well in a room that has been dog/toddler proofed when left alone.

Carter knows a decent amount of tricks, too! If he had a resume, we could include: sit, shake, wait, lay down as mastered skills! We’re trying to teach him “inside voice” but that one’s more of a… dream skill.

Behavior around other Dogs, Cats, and Kids

Carter lives in a foster home with four other dogs and is doing great! He can be a little demanding with play but does well when corrected by his siblings when they’re not ready for it. When he first moved into his foster home, he was constantly pestering his canine siblings to play, but now that he’s relaxed a bit, he’s more likely to independently play adjacent to them ignoring him.

Prior to coming to ACR, Carter lived with children and did well with them. Since then, he’s met several children at events and has done great with them! He’s a very patient and kid-friendly dog!

Behavior around People

Carter has never met a stranger! He gives lots of kisses and is so excited to get loved on. He loves being close to his human friends and will try his very best to be a covert lap dog. He’d be an excellent companion for someone who enjoys having a personal, portable space heater.

Exercise Needs

Carter, true to his husky heritage, is an active guy. He loves to be go, go, go all the time! He will need heavy duty play sessions and mental stimulation in order to keep him happy. He loves to play alone with his “spiky ball”.

If you’d like to be considered to adopt, the first step in the process is to submit an application through our website: http://athenscaninerescue.com/adoption-procedures/. Our adoption fee is $250 per dog over the age of 6 months and $300 per dog 6 months or younger. We accept payment by Venmo, PayPal, or card.

This includes: basic vet care (i.e. basic vaccinations, including boosters completed after adoption, spay/neuter, heartworm/flea preventatives, and treatment for any health needs while in our care), a microchip, a week’s worth of food for the trial-period, and a harness lead.

All in state applications will be considered with some preference given to more local applications. WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING OUT OF STATE APPLICATIONS FOR DOGS SIX MONTHS OR YOUNGER.

We do not have a facility and operate through a network of foster homes. Thus, we do not have a phone number. If you’d like to discuss potential adoptions, please email at adopt@athenscaninerescue.com.

More about this rescue

Athens Canine Rescue is a non-profit organization of foster homes in Athens, Georgia. We have no shelter facility and we rely upon a network of foster homes to house our dogs until they are placed in permanent happy homes of their own. ACR only takes in dogs that are friendly, companion animals. As rescue dogs, ACR pups have often been neglected by previous owners, and rarely arrive impeccably trained. They are very trainable however! Whether young or adult, ACR dogs are invariably loving, willing to please and incredibly grateful.
