My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Looking for a loving forever home for Mickey!

Mickey has been in my foster care for 6 months now. He is a 16 month old Australian Shepherd and I rescued him from very neglectful living conditions for the first 10 months of his life. Mickey is an extremely smart, energetic, and loyal boy and needs a home that is willing to spend some time on training and patiently work with him to help him reach his fullest potential.

He is crate trained, housebroken, neutered, and up to date on vaccines and boosters with records. He is also on monthly heartworm prevention as well as flea and tick prevention. Mikey is on anxiety medication that he takes each morning to help him adjust to new things and transitions, and he's doing great on it! He has only been around two other dogs in his life, his brother and our 10 year old mixed breed. Due to his need for training and lack of socialization, he would do best being the only dog, in an active family! Mickey has some struggles with reactivity, and is fearful of new situations and people. I have had him evaluated by a professional trainer, and it is recommended that he spend time in training (potentially a board and train) to help correct some of his fear issues. He is a super sweet boy, but does not enjoy when people come over, so he will need training on those situations. I am more than happy to work with whoever is committed to adopting him and has the time, on choosing the best trainer, and I will also help with the cost of those services.

Mickey loves his family. He loves to play ball, run around outside (he will need a fenced in yard), snuggle as if he's a small lap dog, and be on watch. He takes a bit to warm up to people, so patience is key, but once he does, he is like velcro! Mickey has done great with our 4 & 6 year old children, but will ultimately do best in a home without children since their energy is more stressful for him.

I highly recommend that his forever family start him out with professional training to help him be the best he can be. He has been to the vet, on walks, had clicker training sessions (loves food so training is easy!), and each time he does better. He is a working breed, and he wants to please, but he needs someone with patience, consistency, and love. Professional training will be most helpful in everyday commands, but also to socialize him and work on reactivity.

Mickey has A TON of potential and will be a wonderful family dog, but he needs a serious and willing owner to be dedicate in solid training and loads of love! Please reach out with any questions, I am happy to answer!
