My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You might know Jersey Joe as a spokesman for Taco Bell, but did you know there was a heavyweight boxer called Jersey Joe Walcott? His real name was Arnold Raymond Cream. Born on January 31, 1914, he became the oldest man to win the heavyweight title at age 37. He later became the first African-American sheriff of Camden County, New Jersey. I'm no boxer, and I've never had a taco either. I'm an orange tabby and white adult male who was found in Kasson. I was so frightened, unhappy, and even hissy when I got here back in February 2023, but I have come a long way since then. Now I like to chase the laser light and play with wand toys, so I could be a fun, entertaining companion for someone. I also enjoy watching birds outside the window. Although I like being around people, I prefer that they do not pet me or pick me up, and I can sometimes become overstimulated and nip, so I would do best in a home with experienced cat owners. It would be best if children in the home are 12 years old or older. A shelter can be a stressful place to be, but I know I really am lucky to be here and not out on the street fending for myself. I can hardly wait to get into a loving home where I can relax and have lots of room to roam and explore. A cat like me could really add some spice to your life! Stop by and get to know Jersey Joe!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Paws and Claws Humane Society (PCHS) is a non-profit, mostly volunteer organization that rescues and shelters homeless cats and dogs until they can be adopted into their “forever” homes. We want our clients to understand that adopting and animal is a lifetime responsibility and commitment to that animal.

All prospective adopters must show (at the time of adoption) a valid drivers license or other acceptable identification to verify their name, address, and age. Adopters must be 18 yrs of age. Children under the age of 12 years old need to be present at time of viewing shelter cats or dogs.

After submitting an application, there is generally a processing period of 1-3 days in order to complete all pre-adoption checks and paperwork before an adopter may take possession of the animal.

More about this rescue

Paws and Claws Humane Society is committed to partnering with the community to shelter, protect, and seek adoptive homes for abandoned or lost companion animals.

We have served Southern Minnesota for over 30 years and we are the largest shelter in the 8 surrounding counties that does not limit the length of stay for the animals in its care.

Paws & Claws is funded completely on donations and fundraising events and receives no federal, state, county or city funds. We currently have nearly 900 dues paying members.

Paws & Claws has a community fund to help pay for the spaying and neutering of companion animals for those who cannot afford it.

We give over 40 tours and presentations annually, educating the public [including over 400 children] about proper animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering companion animals to help control the pet population in Southern Minnesota.

We have over 110 families that participate in the Guardian Angel Program [sponsoring animals] each month.

Paws & Claws will take in an injured animal and get the emergency medical care that it requires.

Local veterinarians in and around Rochester help Paws & Claws by providing over 145 free spay or neuters each year.

In a typical year the shelter will facilitate adoptions and provide care for over 600 dogs and cats.
