My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dexter!

Hi folks, Dexter here! I ended up in an Illinois shelter when my prior owner died. The good news is I came to Albert’s wearing my Green Bay Packers collar, so don’t hate! Go pack go!! I’m about 9 years old and although I had a big change in my life after losing my owner, I’m a really happy guy who usually has a smile on my face and a wag in my tail. I quickly made myself at home in my new foster home. Despite my age, I like to play with toys and will sometimes dig in the toy bin to find a toy to toss around. I also really like sleeping on the couch (and oh boy, can I saw some logs), going on walks and sniffing around the backyard. I’m a hound after all; I’ve got a good sniffer.

I came to Albert’s pretty overweight, weighing 46 pounds, probably because my prior owner was not able to exercise me, but I’m doing well with my weight loss journey and have already lost 6 pounds, but should be closer to 30. My foster parents keep me on a strict diet and make sure I get exercise so I can become my healthiest self soon. I’ve also developed a dry eye condition with my left eye and need medication applied to my eye several times a day. Luckily, I’m a good boy about getting my meds.

I currently live with my foster parents and human foster sister, who is 3 years old. I’m very tolerant of my foster sister hugging me and petting me. I love the attention! I also live with several other dogs and we get along fine, but I would also be happy being an only dog. I’m generally quiet in the house, except if I see something out the window that I need to bark at (which is rare). I do ok in a crate, but my foster parents say I don’t need one because I’m trustworthy when left home alone. I don’t chew on anything or have accidents; I mostly just sleep.

I'm hoping I find my new home soon so we can get to know each other and you can get on loving me that much sooner!

Disclaimer: It is VERY difficult even for a veterinarian to tell the exact age of a dog over two years old. From one vet to another, we can get different age estimates on the same dog and they can vary by several years. We are only making an educated guess based on a few factors like teeth, fur color, and overall body condition, but for dogs who have not been given adequate vet care and food, it can be even more difficult. Every dog is an individual, and we do our very best to age appropriately but make no guarantees as to the age of any dog in our program.
