My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hey Northern California, meet Miss Mary! This gorgeous, charismatic five(ish) year-old female Australian Shepherd is ready for her person(s) to snuggle and cuddle and love. She is a wee bit, only about 30lbs—a perfectly sized snuggle nugget. She is UTD with shots/ vaccines, is microchipped, spayed, and is on preventatives.

Mary is a very sweet and silly girl who loves to go for walks, get affection from people, and who can be a bit of a sass. If she is being ignored, she will do her, “I am an authentic Aussie” demand look or bark. But throw her the ball or a squeaky and she is happy as can be. She is also pretty happy just being around the house. She is an adaptable doggie. Want to snug on the couch? Mary will keep you warm. Want to go for a hike? Mary is game.

Mary came to us with a broken leg. The shelter said she needed to be amputated! We were so scared for her and we scooped her up immediately. When we consulted with our orthopedist, they said it can heal on its own—and it did! She was such a good girl while she was confined and unable to run about.

Mary has been around many other dogs, mostly Aussies though. She has been around older dogs, younger dogs, male, female and puppies. Mary does great with puppies and most dogs but she can be dog selective at times. This seems to be getting better now that she is fully healed but she can be sassy and bossy. Mary might do best as the only dog or with a dog that is easy going. She lives with a few other dogs and has established herself as Miss Queen so if you have a dog, a meet up will be necessary. She is definitely more a people-dog than a dog-dog; she is probably not a dog park doggie. She is 1000% not a cat-dog though so please, no cats. She was almost adopted by her vet tech who fell in love immediately, because, um, who wouldn’t? But Mary protested the existence of the kitty and said no thank you, ma’am.

Mary has pretty decent manners but still needs training. She is potty trained and does well on a leash. She loves car rides and going to new places. She has decent recall. She would thrive in a home who want to teach her all the things—she is a smart auss, after all.

Mary’s needs:

-someone who has a lot of time to be with Mary as she is a velcro dog

-a good dog for someone chill or even older

-a secure, fenced yard

-she is an Aussie, so someone who will take her places or go on walks

-work on basic training

-a home without cats

-someone willing to come to Santa Cruz to meet her

If you are interested in this beautiful girl, please submit an adoption application so we can chat. We apologize in advance if we do not get back to you. We expect many applications and because this girl has our hearts in a big way, we will be very selective.

Thanks
