My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Gabby, a 2-year-old Plott Hound mix who is eagerly searching for a loving and understanding forever home. Despite facing her special needs, Gabby's indomitable spirit shines through, and she is an absolute sweetheart. This precious girl was originally found by animal control as a stray, so not much is known about her up until that point. However, we were all quickly won over by her loving nature. She is an incredibly affectionate girl who craves attention and thrives on companionship. One thing is for sure: Gabby has an incredible sense of humor. Every day spent with her is filled with laughter and joy. She possesses an amazing ability to bring a smile to your face, even on the most challenging days. Gabby's playful nature and funny antics will undoubtedly brighten your life and create lasting memories. Though, it should be noted that Gabby's journey has been marked by challenges, as she was born with a couple different birth defects: a slight deformity in her hind legs, limited vision on her right side, and some cognitive dysfunction. It's not that she is untrainable- she can absolutely learn new skills. It just takes her quite a bit longer to catch on to new patterns. She will likely always have the mentality of a puppy, and doesn't recieve social cues from other dogs very well. That being said, her resilience and ability to adapt are truly remarkable. Despite these obstacles, Gabby approaches life with a positive outlook and an unwavering desire to be loved and cared for. It's important to note that unfamiliar environments can make Gabby feel uncomfortable due to her unique challenges. Above everything else, she needs a calm and structured living space where she can feel safe and secure. A patient and understanding adopter who can help Gabby navigate new situations with patience and care will be essential in helping her build confidence and overcome any anxieties. So, if you just happen to be that compassionate and patient individual or family seeking a special companion, Gabby is ready to capture your heart. She may have her unique needs, but her endless love and unyielding spirit make her a truly exceptional dog. Embrace the opportunity to provide Gabby with the loving home she deserves, and in return, she will fill your life with laughter, love, and unbreakable bonds. Adopt Gabby today and witness the incredible journey of resilience and happiness that she will undoubtedly embark on with you.

More about this shelter

Dogwood Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter.

Since its infancy, compassionate, like-minded volunteers have been the driving force behind Dogwood Animal Shelter. Through auctions and sales, a handful of dedicated people raised enough money to build its first, albeit small facility and was established as a 501(c) 3 in 1976. It was filled beyond capacity almost immediately.

The shelter is funded entirely from donations and proceeds from their Dogwood Animal Shelter Thrift Store.

After years of saving, planning and busting at the seams with fur-babies, in 2005 it was time to build a new facility with their own in-house clinic! Under the direction of Dr. John Reinhold and coupled with a very dedicated and gifted team of Veterinarians and staff, Dogwood Animal Shelter continues to offer low cost spays and neuters to the public as well as services to their shelter buddies; services to approximately 2,000 dogs and cats yearly!

Dogwood Animal Shelter began their journey of being a successful no-kill shelter in 1997, and since then has saved over 40,000 lives!
