My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

Basil, is our senior Lab mix, and she is as sweet and tender as her namesake herb, basil. She has lived with her family since she was a pup and was always well cared for and much loved.
Recently a newborn baby has joined the family, and Basil has become anxious about the new little human in her home. Her family sadly realized it was best to find a baby-free home for Basil and contacted Sunshine.
Basil is a black Lab mix weighing about 80 lbs. A young senior at 8 years old, Basil is a gentle girl who loves all grown-up humans and has lived compatibly with another dog. She has a cute gray muzzle to match her moderate-to-lower energy level. She enjoys a walk each day, at times carrying a favorite stick, and gets around fine. And she enjoys the beach as you can see in her video! But Basil is just as happy to lounge near her humans. Basil loves petting and getting her ears rubbed and one of her favorite things is car rides! She is a smart girl, knowing basic commands such as sit, stay, come, paw, leave it, and this way and this good girl patiently sits and waits for her meals before eating. She likes Kongs and other hard toys and loves to carry around sticks and balls, even on her walks.
Basil lives in New England and when our volunteer met her, he discovered a very happy, friendly dog who appears to have been well cared for. She gets along fine with other dogs, while cats are an unknown. She responds very well to corrections while wearing a harness on walks and she walks nicely on leash. Our volunteer found that she walked easily past several dogs when he had her out walking.
Basil is a friendly, easy-going dog who is pretty and charming. This good girl would enjoy spending time with a family who will give her the attention she loves, car rides, sticks and balls to carry, and daily walks. She is vaccinated, spayed, heartworm negative, and ready for her forever home. Basil is living in New England and is ready to meet you! Don't hesitate to ask about this very sweet, good girl. She truly is a treasure!
Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.
If you would like to be part of Basil's rescue story, and you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact Candy to be considered to adopt Basil.
Black Dog Syndrome
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by an adoption website, member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on the website.
You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these dogs and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
