My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Clancy!

You may recognize this handsome fellow as the senior gentleman from Boone County Animal Shelter. He was formerly known as Dil Pickles, but with a new life comes a new name.

Clancy was reported by the shelter to be an 11 year old Pit Bull Terrier mix who has worked hard to find a home of his own. He originally came to the shelter with 11 dogs in 2021, emaciated and depressed. The shelter worked hard to get weight on him and find him a forever home, and in June 2022, they thought they found it! Unfortunately, circumstances changed in the house, and Clancy ended up back in the shelter, depressed, confused, and grieving the loss of his second family. He watched all his original housemates find homes of their own, and wondered when it would be his turn. While the shelter staff absolutely loved sweet Clancy; unfortunately, a euthanasia date was set due to lack of resources and room in the shelter.

But this is where Clancy’s bad luck ends! Right before the call could be made, we had a foster say YES to taking in this sweet boy! His foster reports he likes to snooze on the couch, but also likes to run around the yard and be a busy body on what the neighbors are doing. He loves belly rubs and likes to “help” with what you’re doing, especially in the kitchen. He enjoys going on walks, going for car rides, playing with the garden hose, and takes treats insanely gently. He is crated trained and will settle in his crate, but due to his past it would be best if he wasn’t crated for long periods of time (6 hours plus).

Clancy gets along well with dogs and cats after slow, proper introductions. He requires an elongated decompression time and slower introductions to new dogs, as his history of being an under-socialized breeding dog does make him cautious of new animals in his space.

Clancy does need a dog-savvy adopter with breed experience. This means not just someone who likes dogs, but someone who understands dog behavior and dog's body language. He is not a dog for a first-time dog owner or novice owner. Clancy is very timid and gets easily frightened by new people and animals. He is currently on a calming chew which has helped with some of the anxiety, but he remains terrified of thunderstorms, loud noises, or any sounds similar to thunder (garage doors, opening/moving garbage cans, etc.). He is still scared of the rain (as he associates it with thunder storms), but has made great progress with going outside and pottying in the rain when he needs to. The world is still a scary unknown for Clancy, but he gains more confidence every day.

Clancy would do best in a home with a calm, confident dog in a home that is quiet with a minimum number of visitors. He would not do well in home where there was a constant flow of kids, neighbors, friends constantly coming & going or small dogs, especially yapping ones. Clancy struggles to meet new people in his safe space (currently his foster home). He’s okay if he's out walking and encounters someone, and did very well during his vet visits. But when people come into his space, he becomes very protective of it. He will bark growl, and even nip at new people that come in the house if he has not become comfortable with them ahead of time. We have found its best to introduce him to some one slowly in an open area like outside & let him slowly get use to them. It has typically taken 2-4 meetings before he feels comfortable. Once he’s comfortable with someone, he’s a love bug! He’s probably never going to be a dog you can take to a restaurant, event, or on vacation. He will definitely never be a dog that can go to the dog park.

Clancy needs someone who understands his past and will have empathy and compassion for him. Despite his past, Clancy is an amazing dog, and with the right person he will continue to become more confident and brave. If his decompression time in his foster home has taught us anything, it is that Clancy will need someone who understands his transition period will likely take weeks to months before he truly feels safe and settled in his new home.

Clancy is a great dog and a very sweet boy. He just needs someone who will give him a chance and will continue to help him to become the best version of himself. If you think you are the dog-savvy home Clancy needs, you can fill out an adoption application through our website at www.lexpitcrew.org/adopt! His adoption fee is $175.00.

Can’t adopt, but want to support Clancy? Consider donating an item from his Amazon wish list! These items will not only help Clancy decompress and settle in his foster home, but will follow him to his new home to make his transition as smooth as possible!
