My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

UPDATE 7/15/23: Sweet Jenkins has been so happy in his new home and his adopter loves him equally. However, the resident dog, who is disabled and adores the family Dad, refuses to accept Jenkins into their home. And so, we were tearfully asked to rehome Jenkins.

Jenkins, who has been called "Yellow" since his arrival (and responds to it!), is always well behaved, smiles often, and loves being included in activities, especially any swimming or beach time. He loves fetching his tennis ball and stuffies. Oh, and ice cream - it's a favorite of Jenkins' now. We've included a cute video of Jenkins enjoying what might have been his first ice cream cone! He does, of course, have limits due to being a senior with some arthritis. He takes joint supplements and an inexpensive anti-inflammatory medicine, and frequent short walks of about a half mile or less are enough for him. But this boy is no couch potato! He loves to run and swim--just not long distances. He eats well, sleeps through the night, enjoys the car, and is an awesome companion dog! He is in New England and will be easy to meet, so please contact Candy to be considered

Background: Jenkins was found as a stray and brought to the Tuscaloosa, AL, animal shelter. The shelter workers realized this friendly, well-mannered dog must belong to someone. He had no collar or tags but he was micro-chipped. However, the chip's phone number was disconnected and Jenkins' former family could not be found.

Tuscaloosa Metro Shelter is a very crowded place, and Sunshine reached out to help Jenkins find a home. They were happy for the help and Jenkins is now with Sunshine hoping for his forever home.

If you love Labs, and if seniors touch your heart, then your heart will melt the minute you meet Jenkins and look into his big, soft brown eyes. He has no bad habits and all the endearing traits of a Lab. A foster who got to know him told us, "Jenkins is extremely affectionate with people, dogs and cats, and he even gets along with our chickens! His favorite pastime is collecting small fuzzies which he will bring to you, waiting for praise. He enjoys walks, and is an absolute doll to bathe and brush. He stands perfectly still adoring the personal attention. His hugs and kisses are the absolute best!"

While at the Tuscaloosa shelter, Jenkins loved getting wet in the kiddy pools they put out for the dogs, so we believe that swimming is on his wish list! He has a moderate energy level and loves to play or go for short walks. At times he goes to the gate at the vet clinic, looking out as if he is expecting someone. This sweet guy wants to be part of a family again, and he is so deserving!

Jenkins was underweight when found but has gained weight and stamina over the past few weeks. At times he has a slight limp due to some arthritis, but nothing that is severe and you have to really watch him to see it. Therefore, we recommend a joint supplement for Jenkins to be taken regularly. He is neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and had been micro-chipped. Don't miss out on this sweet, handsome dog! Jenkins is in New England and would love t meet you!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
