My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

When we met Buster, our first thought was, “We need to help this dog.” You see, he had been hit by a car and brought to the shelter by a good Samaritan.

Our second thought was, “What an amazing dog!”

We were right! We rescued Buster and got him our vet. Both of his front legs had been injured, but we got him the necessary surgeries. Buster is now mobile and ready for his family. Despite his sad past, this affectionate dog always has a smile on his face!

Buster is a Zen Buddha. He is quiet, and friendly with big humans, kiddos, and dogs. (He likes to chase cats.) Buster is house trained, crate-trained and would do well in any home, be it a family with kids or a retired couple who’d enjoy a low-energy constant companion.

Everyone who meets Buster falls in love with him. Reach out if you want to meet him!

Their adoption process

1.

Visit the Facility and Find a Pet

We visit high-kill shelters all over southern California and video adoptable dogs. We emphasize urgents, seniors, and medical dogs.

2.

Submit Application

When a potential adopter or foster inquires about one of our dogs we ask them to fill out an initial application (available electronically).

3.

Interview

We have a conversation with the foster/adopter and get clarification on answers to application questions.

4.

Home Check

We do home checks on all our fosters/adopters before placing the pet.

5.

Sign Adoption Contract

If the foster/adopter passes the home check they sign a contract with us.

6.

Pay Fee

We only charge adoption fees for young, healthy dogs. We pay food and training costs for our fosters.

7.

Take the Pet Home

We deliver the pet to the home and provide pointers on decompression and integration.

Additional adoption info

We require adopters and fosters to notify us if for whatever reason they cannot keep the pet.

Most of our fosters and adopters see our dogs on social media or on our website, but we also attend adoption events.

More about this rescue

Outta the Cage began when a group of technology professionals began volunteering at high-kill shelters. This grass roots effort – and the resulting data – taught us a lot about successful tactics for getting shelter animals adopted. Our mission at Outta the Cage is to get shelter animals seen as individuals in order to find them forever homes.

We go to shelters to video animals (mainly dogs), getting them “outta the cage” and into open areas and play yards. We share the resulting videos on social media and enlist the community to help spread the word. Because we’re data geeks, we also provide networking best practices, offering field-proven tips for optimal advocacy, networking, animal profiling, and post-adopting integration.

Outta the Cage highlights “at risk” animals, including seniors, ill and special-needs dogs, and so called “dominant breeds.” These dogs are often overlooked by potential adopters but, through targeted networking, video sharing, and subsidized adoption fees, we can help them become wonderful forever family members!

We also advise shelters, rescues, animal advocacy groups, and private companies on the application of information technology to animal rescue.
