My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cayden’s backstory:
Cayden was a stray at an animal control facility, completely covered in dirt and mats with bulging eyes due to untreated glaucoma. When we saw him, we knew we had to pull him to safety after no owners came forward to claim him. His treatment became an emergency, and several rescue transport volunteers made a relay across several states to get him to our emergency veterinarian. He had to have one eye removed because it was beyond repair and was very painful for him. Thankfully, we were able to save his other, though he lost his sight from it. Cayden also had a complete dental, neuter, and is now up-to-date on his essential vaccinations.

Breed and Hair Notes:
Cayden has hair that grows and not fur. He is a stunning blend of Shih Tzu and perhaps Lhasa Apso. He is agreeable to baths at home and calmly stands in a bathtub for them. He is grateful to be taken care of after years of neglect. You can see how different he looks with long hair and then shaved. We wanted to keep his stunning locks, but they were too matted to his skin. He is now shaved down, but his hair will grow again! PLEASE NOTE: his hair will grow indefinitely, and he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care.

Get to Know Cayden:
Cayden is approximately 5-6 years old and about 18 pounds. He is currently being taught to go potty on pads indoors and to go potty outside on walks by his foster family. Despite Cayden not having his sight, he LOVES his walks. He follows the lead of his person, and he confidently walks and trusts his person’s guidance.

Cayden wags his tail a lot and is described as super sweet and lovable by everyone who meets him.

Recently, Cayden has learned the joys of sleeping with the pack on the bed for naps and throughout the night. He also enjoys dog beds and is happy on his own at times throughout the day. When he wants to know who is around him and where everyone is, he will call bark, then wait for an answer as if to ask, “Where are you? I want to be with you!” He seldom barks, but he uses his voice strategically to connect with this family. He wants to be part of things, and he will follow with sound and smell to stay connected. He is impressive and amazing. He does not feel sorry for himself, and we should not feel sorry for him either. We can learn a lot from dear Cayden, just by watching his actions and love for life, despite all he’s been through.

Cayden loves to be cuddled and fall asleep in his people’s arms. He’s a gentle soul with so much life to live.

Ideal Home:
Cayden is a pretty laid back guy and takes his lack of sight in stride. At the same time, he needs extra attention due to it. Things must stay in place in the home so he can maneuver safely through it. A quiet and calm home is ideal, not one that has a lot of people coming and going in it. He should also be in a home without young children who do not understand boundaries. Older children who respect boundaries would be loved by Cayden.

If you expect to put Cayden in a crate at all during the day or night, please do not apply. Cayden will flourish in a home where he can hang out with his people during the day and sleep with them at night.

Cayden can successfully be in a home where he is the only dog, though he lives in a foster home with multiple dogs, and he really enjoys their company.

Cayden is a gem, and we are so thrilled to have the opportunity to give him this second chance for a committed and ideal family!
