My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

🐶 🐕 PEPPER Female Border collie mix approximately 8 months, 33 lbs & AVAILABLE – check out more photos and see the rest of our dogs on our website -- https://norcalbcrescue.org/available-dogs/our-dogs/ 🐕 🐶

PEPPER is a smooth coat border collie cross weighing a slender 33 pounds and standing about 23” at the shoulder. She is about eight months old (DOB 11/19/2022). Pepper is a beautiful, well-balanced girl with large dark brown inquisitive and curious eyes. She is white, with a sprinkle of black spots on her skin. Pepper has black accents on her face and up right expressive erect ears.

PEPPER is fun, energetic, and very curious. She loves to explore the yard on her own and stays very close to her humans when outside.

PEPPER desires a family who will spend time with her and train her to her true potential. She learned very quickly to walk on leash, and her recall is 95% solid even with distractions. When practicing her recall in training sessions, Pepper will jump or bound over any obstacle to get to you. Whether during training or play, Pepper is “full speed,” and there is no slow down or halfway. Pepper learned very quickly to retrieve a ball, toy, and soft dog Frisbee. In training, she is learning to “sit” and “wait” to retrieve the ball on command. Her training sessions are short and several times a day with positive reinforcement and food treat reward. Pepper is both toy and food motivated. She could be a wonderful jogging or hiking partner. She might also be a splendid agility or sport dog. Pepper is agile and athletic. However, given her age, she has a puppy’s clumsiness. She learns quickly and is very willing to please.

PEPPER does well in her crate. She is content in her crate for down time, to eat, and to sleep. She sleeps soundly and quietly in her crate through most of the night. She has not had any accidents in the house or in her crate. Pepper is also learning to travel in a crate when riding in the car. She does whimper and cry but settles in after about ten minutes in the car.

PEPPER will lightly cry and whimper when she needs to go outside to go to the bathroom. When let outside, Pepper will relieve herself on command and looks for positive reinforcement. In foster care, Pepper has been allowed to be on leash in the house. She has learned to lay / stay on her bed quietly in whichever room her bed is placed. Pepper is not allowed to roam freely about the house, and she is not allowed on furniture. In the short time, Pepper has been in foster care, she has become what we call “property protective.” She alerts if a person walks close to the house. While inside the house, she will alert, letting you know a person is at the door.

It took a few days for PEPPER to be playful with her foster brother. Now they have bonded and run, play, and chase each other. Pepper is also a girl who desires to be around her person and bonds with one person very quickly. While she has not been exposed to babies or toddlers, Pepper likes and will play and respect young or small children (if the child can follow simple instructions 😊). She has not shown interest in squirrels and has not been introduced to cats.
Pepper is looking for an active family who will include her in ALL their activities, and who will support and train her to become the very best dog she can be. Dogs with Pepper’s potential and willingness to please are few and far between. We think she’s very special.

PEPPER is micro-chipped, spayed, heartworm negative and on preventative, and up-to-date on vaccinations. If you have an approved Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions Adoption Application (https://norcalbcrescue.org/adoption/adoption-application/) and wish to inquire about PEPPER, please email us at Adoptions@norcalbcrescue.org. If you have an approved adoption application with Border Collie Rescue of Northern California let us know and we will request it be forwarded to us for consideration.

PEPPER is fostering in Loomis in Placer County, CA.
