My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Darwin’s foster parents found him in a friend’s backyard, covered in fleas and with marks all over his body from the rough street cat life. Darwin agreed to a much-needed bath and was introduced to all the perks of indoor cat life. He went from street cat to a cat tree-loving, friskee-eating, cuddle-wanting cutie pie in 15 minutes flat. Darwin loves lying by the window and looking out into the backyard from a place of safety, no longer worried about being attacked. He loves to give his foster parents head bumps, and greets them with the cutest gravelly meow, especially around meal times. As food-motivated as Darwin may be, he will take a break mid-meal to give you his attention if he feels he hasn’t seen you enough that day.

Today, Darwin has his fur grown back in, and his bright little eyes are feeling safe and happy and ready to take in his new family!

Darwin is good with calm dogs and cats, but is still learning not to get too feisty when it comes to cats that want to play with him. He’d do well in a home with calm animals that are indifferent to newcomers, or animals that will not try to play with him too much. This might change as Darwin relaxes his flight-or-fight instincts around other furry creatures. Darwin loves his people! He is a big tomcat cuddlebug and would love to receive your scritches and kisses.

While outside and unneutered, Darwin contracted FIV, which can be managed and he can have a long life despite his FIV+ status. Darwin does have some nasal discharge that happens occasionally. The best treatment that we have found for this is daily lysine supplement in his food and that appears to keep the sneezing at bay.

Darwin, while FIV+, is a VERY EASY special needs kitty. All he needs to stay in tip top shape are these things: indoor only home, vet visits at least 2X a year and more if he has a cold, daily lysine powder in his food. That's it! The powder is cheap and can be ordered from Amazon or Chewy. While vet expenses cannot be fully anticipated, Darwin does not require any special food or anything super costly to keep him healthy at this time. FIV+ cats can live long, healthy, fulfilling lives when given proper care. Darwin can live with FIV negative cats as new science indicates that FIV+ and FIV neg cats can live together. As long as the cats are neutered and no fighting is happening, the new science suggests that the chance of transmission is relatively low. See https://www.humanesociety.org/news/fiv-positive-cats for more information. Further information on FIV in cats:

More about this rescue

PetPromise is an Ohio 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization made up of volunteers who are dedicated to creating a world where there are no more homeless pets through education, rescue, sterilization, and adoption.

PetPromise rescues animals from high-kill animal shelters and provides foster care, medical care, and rehabilitation to once homeless, neglected, or abused dogs and cats as well as adoption services so that these pets may find loving permanent homes.

Through our City Kitty Program, PetPromise works with feral cat caregivers to control feral cat populations in central Ohio through trap/neuter/return. , PetPromise provides rabies vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery and offers the use of humane traps when needed.

The PetPromise Pet Food Pantry provides temporary assistance in the form of cat and dog food free of charge to caretakers of feral cat colonies and pet owners who are experiencing economic hardship.

The founders of PetPromise began rescuing and finding homes for stray cats and dogs in 1996. The founders along with a network of other people interested in the welfare of homeless companion animals formed PetPromise in 1999. PetPromise was officially incorporated on February 4, 2000.
