My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ducky is a 6 year old, big, yellow mix at a healthy 80 lbs. Maybe part Basset Hound if you can believe it! He was picked up as a stray and the shelter called us immediately. He is a big, strong, sweet boy with a gentle heart and soul and the minute we met him, we knew he was coming home with us. He loves to be by his people- and he quickly recognizes and trusts people who are there to help him and be his friend.
It's clear that at some time in the past, people have not shown him their best. Ducky came to us skinny, filthy and with bloody scars on his back and ears from fleas and flies. Now he has had a bath, discovered he loves to be brushed and has had time to heal his little heart and body.

In the weeks Ducky has been in rescue- fostered with a female lab, and with men and women- he has shown himself to be a perfect houseguest and pal and to elicit a lot of laughter with his playful demeanor. In foster, Ducky has spent a couple hours at a time on occasion by himself or with another dog in a small condo, and neighbors report they do not hear a peep from him. He will bark a few times if he hears someone new, but corrects quickly when told 'no barking, it's okay'. He let out a little howl one time, that caused his foster folks to laugh; and perhaps that touch of basset hound explains it!

Ducky rides in the car like a charm, either sleeping or serving as co-pilot. He walks on leash or harness pretty well, but will definitely benefit from ongoing leash training. He has never had an accident in the house and will wait to go outside to do his business.

Ducky is a leaner and loves to lay by or on his person's feet or legs. He would really like to sleep on the couch right next to you. And this boy knows how to get comfortable! He sleeps all night and naps periodically throughout the day.

Now here is the fine print: While Ducky comes to us with an unknown history, we do know that he has old bone injuries. He has seen an Orthopedic Specialist who feels Ducky can be happily maintained with regular activity, weight control and pain management. While you can see he has an injury in his walk, Ducky doesn't know there is a problem! He looks like he is singing, 'I'm a hap, hap, happy guy' when he trots!

Ducky's ideal home will be with people who are big dog savvy. He is strong and can be 80 lbs of 'No'. He would love another gentle dog to help him learn the rules of the house and for small bouts of play! A female dog about his age (6-8) would be a plus! Ducky has mentioned, quite loudly, that he would prefer no cats or small animals. He will chase them.

Ducky sleeps on either a dog bed or on an old couch at his foster home (preferably right next to his foster mom), but he will sleep wherever he is directed. He prefers not to walk up stairs, so a one-story home is preferable, but not required

. What Ducky REALLY wants, in addition to a loving human presence, is a backyard with grass on which he can roll on his back whenever and for as long as he wants! It really is one of his favorite things to do and is adorable! A backyard to have some short zoomies, play a little ball and lay in the sun-now that is what he calls heaven!

If Ducky is the boy for you, visit our website and complete an application. He will just be laying in the sun while he waits for you to find him.
