My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gandalf is a 15 year old neutered male long-haired cat . We will be looking for a very special home for him due to his age and special needs. Gandalf has stage 2 of 4 chronic kidney disease, which is common in older cats. He eats a prescription kidney care diet and has a healthy appetite. He only has two teeth remaining but eats both canned food and kibble (usually soaked in water or kitty broth treats). He uses his litter box 100% of the time. He came to us with a urinary tract infection which has cleared up with an antibiotic injection. He has some back-end weakness and his mobility is not the greatest, so he'd prefer a home with few or no stairs, and an owner who might get him a ramp to get up on the bed. He has jumped up onto the short bed in the foster home, but his back end doesn't quite make it up there and he drags himself up so I haven't let him do that anymore.

Gandalf loves to be petted. He will sit on your lap and let you scratch his chin and ears for as long as you are willing. He has a very quiet gentle purr that I love to hear. He does shed quite a bit since he is a longhaired cat, but he tolerates being brushed. Sometimes gets a little grumpy about it after a while. You'll know when he's had his limit when his tail starts flicking and he lets out a grumpy meow, but he has never bitten or scratched me even when I cleaned his ears or applied ear medicine (he came to us with ear infections that have cleared up now with medicine and cleaning). Gandalf needs some help with grooming. He came to us with matted dirty fur, but we've cleaned him up quite a bit and shaved out the mats. Last time he saw the vet they shaved a "potty patch" for him and that has helped keep him clean, so the adopter should expect to get that done occasionally. With brushing and spot cleaning with baby wipes, he should do fine.

Gandalf lives with other cats currently, but we keep him separated when not supervised because the young cats he lives with are too much for him. They pounce on him and swat his tail and groom him, and he's really too old for that nonsense. So while he's never interacted negatively with them, he does retreat into his safe places when they come near. If an adopter has other cats, we'd like to make sure they are cats who would respect his boundaries and mostly just leave him alone. He'd do great with other senior cats, or as your one and only. He has met my dogs and had no reaction, but because he is deaf and his mobility isn't great, he'd need to live with dogs who will not bother him or chase him.

Gandalf was at risk of euthanasia at the local open-intake shelter because of his medical needs and overcrowding at the shelter. We pulled him to get the dental he needed and evaluate his kidney disease and give him a new chance at life. Please share this post to help us find a special adopter who can see the beauty in an older cat. He still has a lot of love to give and he promises to not be too much trouble. He mostly just wants to nap in a soft place, get petted by his humans, and nom on lots of yummy food.
