My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dolores!

Hi, I’m Dolores. I have come a long way since I was rescued off the streets of Illinois. The word “euthanasia” was tossed around if my family didn’t come for me. Thankfully, with time running out, I didn’t need to find out what the word euthanasia meant because volunteers from Albert’s Dog Lounge came to rescue me from the shelter. I had a lot of health concerns to work through before I would be ready for adoption, but they are committed people! I told them I’m a senior lady now and when I first arrived to my foster mom’s house, I was missing half of my fur on my little body and what I did have, was starting to mat. My skin was red and very, very itchy. I couldn’t see well, if at all, and my ears hurt too. After about 3 months, I am happy to report that my skin is feeling SO much better and all of my fur is coming in nicely! I got groomed to even things out and I was such a good girl for the groomer. I weighed about 7lbs when I got here, but my foster mom has the good food (and treats!), so now I’m a much healthier weight of almost 9lbs! My ear infections are all cleared up and my vision has improved, but I will need eye drops in both eyes twice a day for the rest of my life. I have learned to take the drops so well especially because I get treats after! I am on a daily medication called Apoquel for my itchiness, which is probably what started my skin issues in the first place. Sometimes, my foster mom has to give me medicated baths to help my skin heal even more. I don’t particularly like them, but I’m a good girl anyway. I have a bad back knee so I’m on daily pain meds for that. I walk with a limp when walking around the house, but when I’m outside and want to move faster, I will hold that back leg up and hop along my merry way. My foster mom has a lot of before photos, but I asked her to only post the ones after my grooming. Recently, I’ve been rocking the “bed head” look quite often, but it is part of my character.

Now that we got the medical things out of the way, I’m going to tell you about my personality! I’m a silly little girl that just loves to make my foster mom laugh. I love her very much. I love to follow her around and supervise when she makes food. I like to cuddle on her lap when she’s on the couch. I also LOVE squeaker toys. I prefer to play with my toys alone. I just have too much fun myself that I don’t want to share with other dogs or humans when I’m in my play mode. They all respect that and I just throw the toy around myself. I currently live with a lot of other pups and I don’t engage with them much, but I don’t really mind that they are there either. I haven’t met any cats, so who really knows what I would do if I saw one. I have met some little humans, but because I don’t really like if someone tries to take a squeak toy from me, I’d probably do best not to live with them. I don’t mind them if they visit and want to pet me a bit though. My foster mom has a fenced in yard and it’s perfect because I don’t really want to go for a walk with the condition of my back leg, but I do like to explore the yard at my own pace. My foster mom has also asked me a lot about my former family. I won’t tell her anything, but she knows that I had one at some point because I haven’t had one potty accident in the house since I moved in. She tells me that her home is just a landing pad for me to get healthy and find my forever home. I hope they find me soon because I am ready to snuggle up with them!

*Dolores is being fostered in Sturgeon Bay.
