My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Nala-at-a-glance: 2-1/2 year old, female, spayed, American Bulldog mix, 60 lbs., up-to-date on core vaccines, microchipped and heartworm negative. Nala takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention.

Sweet Nala was surrendered to a noisy, scary shelter with her six 4-week old puppies and was bewildered over what, why and how.  We immediately came to their rescue and could only do that because an amazing foster family said YES to the call. Nala was the BEST mama to her puppies!  She loves playing fetch and tug-of-war and when playtime is over, she enjoys her quiet time snuggled up on her favorite chair.  She knows sit, paw and down. Nala loves giving kisses once she warms up to you and is gentle taking treats. She's very sweet towards kids, even toddlers and hasn't exhibited any resource guarding with people.  She doesn't seem to have much of a prey drive and has only shown mild curiousity towards her foster's chickens.  She enjoys her toys, but doesn't destroy anything that's not hers. Nala is currently in a board-and-train program where she's learning how to relax in environments where there's a lot of activity like stores and cafe's and also to help her get over her discomfort around men she doesn't know.  She's going to be one polished and well-trained pup once her program is over!  Her trainer has wonderful things to say about her temperament and will provide a complimentary one-on-one session to whoever adopts her.

New Foster Home Update:  Nala completed her board-and-train program with flying colors and is now settling into her foster home. Here's what her foster mom has to say about Nala.... Nala loves having her nightly spa wipe and coconut oil rub down before bed. We do this to help relieve her skin allergies. She loves jumping in bed with me, ensuring she is touching at least the smallest part of me. The best part of it all she does not snore so we can all sleep in peace. Nala loves her morning playtime in the yard playing with her balls, followed up by her morning training and small breakfast. She then takes her mid-morning nap followed up by her lunchtime yard play or a walk stopping for lots of sniffs along the way. Nala loves her after-work meal and play time of us spending hours playing ball and tug-of-war. Squeaky toys are her favorite toy to play with all day long. Nala will be a wonderful addition to a loving active person or family. She is eager to learn and to show you what she knows already with pride and excitement. Nala is great in public, in stores and on outings, and can fit right in with your daily routine. I will say, just have stock in heavy duty chew toys and balls because she will be ready to run, jump and play alone or with you.

More about this rescue

LOVEPAWS was founded as an animal intake prevention program to help keep pets in homes and out of shelters. To do this, we offer various types of assistance to pet owners including our pet food pantry and our re-homing service. We help find new homes for pets whose owners cannot keep them but do not want to surrender their pet to the shelter. While our focus is on Prince George’s County, MD, we offer these services to the entire DC Metro area.

Our scope and mission has grown quickly since we were founded in 2019 and we now pull dogs and cats from open-admission, high-intake shelters in MD, VA and other Southern states. This has expanded our rescue to be able to save dogs and cats of all breeds. Our expanded mission is to save the lives of abandoned dogs and cats and place them in loving and permanent homes. While we are a non-breed-specific rescue, we are a pittie-friendly rescue that has a soft spot for the pit bulls at the Prince George’s County animal shelter. They face the heartbreaking reality of the county’s pit bull ban which makes them unavailable for adoption to the public. We are committed to stepping forward whenever we can and wherever there is the greatest need.

LOVEPAWS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are an exclusively foster-based rescue with our foster network spanning MD, DC, and VA.
