My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Autumn-at-a-glance: 3 years old, female, spayed pit bull terrier, 55 lbs., up-to-date on core vaccines, microchipped and heartworm negative. Autumn takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention.

Autumn was incredibly emaciated when she first arrived at the shelter, just skin and bones. As soon as we saw how bad her condition was, we knew we had to get her out of the shelter and into a loving foster home where she'd get 3 square meals a day and soft dog beds to recover in. She has already gained 25 lbs since being with LOVEPAWS! She's pretty low energy and mostly sleeps the day away. Autumn is super sweet, incredibly chill and snuggly. She's not into playing with toys (maybe this is the first time she's had them and she's not sure what to do?), but loves a walk. She has exhibited some uncertainty around men which we hope to desensitize her to as we continue to love on her and show her that no one is going to harm her. She wants to be with her people all the time, but is also happy to be in her crate when home alone. Her favorite pastime is couch snuggles with her humans.

The first step to adopt of our adorable adoptable animals is to fill out an application on our website. We will reach out to you about your application once we receive it. The general steps of the process involve reviewing an application, conducting a phone interview with an adopter, doing a home visit, arranging a meet and greet and putting in place an adoption contract and collecting the adoption fee.

More about this rescue

LOVEPAWS was founded as an animal intake prevention program to help keep pets in homes and out of shelters. To do this, we offer various types of assistance to pet owners including our pet food pantry and our re-homing service. We help find new homes for pets whose owners cannot keep them but do not want to surrender their pet to the shelter. While our focus is on Prince George’s County, MD, we offer these services to the entire DC Metro area.

Our scope and mission has grown quickly since we were founded in 2019 and we now pull dogs and cats from open-admission, high-intake shelters in MD, VA and other Southern states. This has expanded our rescue to be able to save dogs and cats of all breeds. Our expanded mission is to save the lives of abandoned dogs and cats and place them in loving and permanent homes. While we are a non-breed-specific rescue, we are a pittie-friendly rescue that has a soft spot for the pit bulls at the Prince George’s County animal shelter. They face the heartbreaking reality of the county’s pit bull ban which makes them unavailable for adoption to the public. We are committed to stepping forward whenever we can and wherever there is the greatest need.

LOVEPAWS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are an exclusively foster-based rescue with our foster network spanning MD, DC, and VA.
